How do you prioritize bills when your income dips below the needed level? I am focusing on utilities so they don't get out of hand and our car payment because they refuse to work with us and we have to have a car. We are ok on groceries. I made sure the freezer and pantry were pretty full when this mess started before hubby had to stop working. That is about all we can pay right now. Ohio just opened up PUA for 1099 yesterday but if we get it its most likely going to our landlord. Its taken them 7 weeks to allow 1099 to apply so I don;t except them to process it anytime soon.

When I got furloughed, I took a look at our budget and looked for what could be cut or reduced. If you haven’t already, call your insurance and switch to pleasure or storage. I switched ours from commuter to pleasure and that dropped our bill $30. I also decided to skip my student loan payment because we had paid it in advance (this was before the forbearance had been kicked in. ) Once I did all that, I focused on getting our big bills taken care of (insurance, utilities, and phone) and once those were done, I moved on to pet insurance ($100) and everything else was small subscriptions like Netflix. I also cut down our envelopes. I dropped mine and my husband’s gas envelopes since we weren’t driving a whole lot and we dropped fun as well. That dropped envelopes down from 320 to 160. I will add that we were in a position where we had savings to fall back on and my husband is getting unemployment so we knew we’d be fine for 2-3 months but I looked for ways to make that money stretch as we didn’t know how long I’d be out of work

She Makes Money Moves (a podcast) has a good episode about this. The episode is called “You Lost Your Job, Now What? ” I know it doesn’t say you lost your job but the financial expert on the episode gives specific advice about prioritizing bills in these kind of circumstances.
