There’s no point arguing with the guy. He’s going to do & say whatever he wants. It just sucks he’s going to put others at risk. That being said, everyone else needs to continue doing what we’re doing. If he kills some he loves due to blatant ignorance, it’s unfortunate, but completely on him. All the information the CDC has is out there.
by (570 points)
@derisible you are right, no point arguing with this guy or others that share his views. We can only do what we feel is right to keep ourselves and others safe. We are being asked to stay home and when we go out it is suggested we wear a mask. I don’t think that is asking for too much on our part. If all of this can help stop the spread of this highly contagious disease then it is the least we can do and why wouldn’t you want to do it? When I see the people on the frontlines, I feel I owe it to these people to do what is being asked. It’s a small sacrifice compared to what they sacrifice everyday.

Wow. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Educate yourselves. Socialism has brought into our lives many things you use everyday or could need in an emergency.
by (8.8k points)
Socialism, much like the libertarians just create a larger amount of corruption. I'm not ignorant, I just refuse to participate in this test. social distancing is always a great idea. some people have no respect for others personal space. but by being fearful sheep, you made it possible for the government to never forget how easy it was to take control of your life. from social events, school, restaurants, church, and even if you're allowed to leave your own home.

I emailed the Mayor and our alderman. Mayor’s assistant replied with no we are not making it mandatory just suggesting. Alderman Moylan thanked me for my concern and said this will be discussed at Monday’s meeting. Will be interesting to see if they make it mandatory. I hope they get a lot of pressure to do it!

@outthink I was in Walmart yesterday and did not see many masks being worn

@woodsy well there is more than one Walmart? Don’t jump to conclusions buddy. She is truthful. BYE!

@outthink considering this is a dp community chat I figured you were talking about the Walmart nearest dp.

@interrelate I live in Des Plaines. That doesn’t mean she does and that’s why you don’t assume. Have a good one.

@outthink the original post reads “Did Des Plaines put an order out for mandatory face masks at all times in public? ” So you replied about your sister going to a Walmart unrelated to what the post is talking about? Perhaps you can share with us on what Walmart she went to then so we can see what other towns have implemented this

They do they can come give me a ticket. Only ones who should be eating them are those who feel sick so we know who to avoid.
by (1.2k points)
Frontliner here. Yes, everyone should be wearing masks because it does have the potential to be airborne. And the best way for people to keep their secretions to themselves is for everyone to wear a mask. And yes, there have been completely asymptomatic ppl who have tested positive. Listen to science, not politics. Do your own research and make sure to read evidence-based data, not the news.
by (5.1k points)
@woodsy I know the mask is to protect others, not me. If everyone was wearing them we would all be protecting each other at least to some degree.
by (3k points)
@abdu0 thank you for your work!

@abdu0 @newcomen please take the time to read the above post and educate yourself from a reputable source like the cdc opposed to the media. Not looking for a debate but if everyone understood this we could get better control of it. Be well.

@yowl344 it absolutely goes both ways. It helps both you AND others, but it is more effective if worn by both.

by (410 points)
@oxa792 exactly. I've already had this argument with Georji. This selfish, disrespectful attitude is one of the reasons Des Plaines has such a large number of cases. Some people only care about themselves.

People who think we are ready for life as normal and who refuse to wear masks are exactly the problem. You’re the reason Des Plaines is one of the top suburbs with the most cases. You complain that you want your freedom back yet your recklessness and disregard is exactly what causes these restrictions to persist.

@locule You need to use a cotton mask so you can breathe through it easily.

by (1.3k points)
@junco56 In case you don’t know how to sew or have a sewing machine (like me): Update on how to actually buy the masks from W Diamond Group/Hart Schaffner Marx locally. A great price too, a pack of five for $30. It’s wonderful that so many people have taken to make these, but this is such a great local company (founded in 1897! ) to support! Give me a minute to get the link
by (1.3k points)
This is from local company here in Des Plaines which is been in business since 1897! I’m not involved with them in anyway but I had seen this post a few days ago and copied and pasted it to my page. “Hi Friends. Due to popular demand, the W Diamond Group/Hart Schaffner Marx non-medical grade face masks are now available for direct on line purchase and to donate to communities in need. If you and your family are still without masks, or your employer or business need them, we may be able to help with your supply needs. The Chicago factory has re-opened, with remaining capacity available to reach the max of 300K masks per week. This will help bring back American jobs and support Americans getting back to work during the COVID-19 crisis. Check out the basic information here.  If you are looking for large quantities, complete the contact information at the bottom of the home page and someone at the company will be in touch. Feel free to IM me directly as well. And yes, I was paid a giant sum of money for the role as model. Taking one for the team! Peace and health. “

What about those that will significant hardships from wearing masks? For example, my granddaughter is deaf and relies heavily on lip reading to communicate. The ethical issues we face with these directives are significant
by (940 points)
@choriocarcinoma3 she relies on watching your lips as well as clarity in speech. Both of which are inhibited by full cloth masks. I am sure when schools resume as well as sports activities, these types of masks will need to be readily available to coaches, teachers etc
by (2.5k points)
Robyn, are you suggesting that there are ethical issues with everyone else wearing the masks? I can’t say I agree.

People wise up. Some individuals have forced this by not listening to the stay at home orders. The numbers keep getting worse here, ever wonder why? I wear a mask without the order because you may not know if you're sick. That's why COVID is so insidious. But if my father got it, a diabetic, 2 time cancer survivor, without a spleen, he would die. Period. So quit your bitching about these inconveniences, listen to the SCIENTISTS, and we'll get back to normal sooner rather than later.

Are we supposed to wait until a vaccine? I like some of my friends own small businesses and cannot survive. We cannot even apply for a small business loan as phase 2 of the stimulus is being blocked by the Dems. This isn’t about greed it’s about providing for our families including their health.
by (13.9k points)
@perpetual Baldwin how you can put this all on the House is beyond me. But if you lean right you are following party lines. I lean left so of course I disagree. But this is a virus that doesn’t care which party we are in. Just stay safe and be considerate of others.
by (270 points)
@agitprop91 I was specifically talking about the stimulus package for phase 2. It is being held up because of politics. And yes it is stalled in the house. I like the fact that folks can choose to wear a mask or choose not to. I wear one whenever I go to the grocery store. I see a lot of people not wearing them. And I am ok with that. I just stay 6 ft away. Again my choice.
by (13.9k points)
@perpetual Baldwin that’s great that you wear a mask. You are not being selfish and have made a choice to help protect others. It’s a shame that others aren’t being as considerate.
by (270 points)
@agitprop91 but again it is their choice whether we like it or not.

Everyone in my household is in the high risk category. We NEED everyone around us wearing masks. Especially since one of us can't wear a mask because it triggers asthmatic symptoms. I am all for liberty and anyone's belief in small government, but sometimes we need your charity and sympathy to get your fellow humans through a situation. This is one of those times. Please, I promise I will repay your kindness when the time comes, but for now, please just give us this small ask.

by (1.3k points)
@variometer87039 well said, I do have an underlying condition and I am wearing a mask hoping that it’ll protect me (even though it’s supposed to protect others first). The rare times I go out I am praying I will see others with masks so I don’t catch the virus. It’s so little to ask of people and yet their civil liberties are somehow being infringed upon?! That’s just crazy. Have kindness and humanity for your fellow neighbors!

Don’t know that mayor can make it mandatory. Governor doesn’t have the power to make it mandatory. just common sense highly, highly recommended, as some scientists are saying that just talking to someone, not even coughing, can put virus to you if you are not social distancing or close to people. my opinion , better safe than sorry. but masks when you are around people. not necessarily if you are exercising, but do keep social distancing. that was what I heard this morning, at least.

by (2.5k points)
It could also be selfish of you to not allow me to go to work to support my family since I haven't gotten my unemployment approved yet
by (1.5k points)
@sarinasarine267 I need to go to the grocery store occasionally. And having to wear a mask has nothing to do with you being able to go to work.
by (2.5k points)
But the problem is everyone is so focused on mask/no mask rather than starting to ease restrictions meaning I cannot go to work
by (1.5k points)
@sarinasarine267 we are focused on it because it is a simple thing we can do to keep all of us safer. And if the infection rate slows down, maybe businesses can reopen sooner. I am sorry to hear that you are unemployed and haven't gotten your approval yet. I genuinely am.

I don't believe it goes into effect yet until tomorrow or the next day. I believe the mayor still has to sign the official order. And from what was said, it was more about the businesses complying.
