My neighbour has said they would prefer us not to stain the new adjoining fence blue as they're worried about the colour running through to their side but we want it to match it to the otherside. What would you do? Edit thanks for everyone's response we've had blue fencing for 10 years we've paid half towards the new side & surprised when we were asked not to paint it blue. I like them so ordered a shower curtain to cover up lol

You could paint it and offer to touch up their side if it does bleed through

Who paid to have it done?

Depends who's fence it is really. If its theirs then I would respect what they want

Who paid for the fence ? If it is there's then you cant touch it, but could buy one and put it in front of there's. Will be yours to do what you want with then. If it's yours do what you want with it

Paint it carefully and offer to paint their side their colour choice afterwards? The trellis will be tricky though!

Whose fence is it? If they had a bucket of water ready for any drips going through they could clean them away immediately.

Looks like it is their fence, in which case you cant touch it. You would normally own the left hand side that you have already painted. You can't own both sides.

I find it only seeps through if you use a big brush or spray it . I’ve done one side of mine light grey and the other forest green with no seepage . You could paint the blue side to match his would be the best option .

It depends on whose fence it is. If it’s yours then you’re allowed to paint it. If it’s theirs then you’ll have to respect their wishes x

Tell them to mastic up the joints as you will be painting it next week and to sit there with a bucket of water to wash up any sneaky runs that get through.

@catapult sadly not . if the fencing belongs to the neighbour . even the side in your own garden belongs to the neighbour

Could you not do a trellis wall I keep seeing people are doing with blue flowers maybe and bring the blue in that way. Happy you. Happy neighbours?

Personally I'd not paint it, a bit of paint running isn't worth a spoilt relationship with neighbours in my view. You never know when you'll need them and nothing worse than not getting on. However if you do decide to go for it I'd do it with care to make sure the paint doesnt run, if you do a few thin coats rather than on heavy coat you might avoid it bleeding through. It's worth considering you may have to approach them one day to ask them to do, or as the case may be, not do something that you'd prefer they didn't xx

Me and my neighbours, both sides, paint or stain whatever we wish. Obviously carefully so as not to drip through the gaps. It's very petty.

Buy pretty shower curtain to hang on your side (apparently the in thing now have beach themed or whatever)?

If they have asked you not to and it’s their fence then you can’t , you can’t fix anything to it without permission either as there property and would break law

Don’t touch it if if there fence they could take you to court for the price of replacing it !

Get some bamboo screening , stain the same blue and staple to fence x
by (3.3k points)
@samira6181 I think they'd moan about that too as your joining it to 'their' fence. So petty.
by (660 points)
@tripletail78 it's a few staples? Tell them that or you will stain it anyway

I’d leave it, the blue makes it look like an old pallet. If you must have the blue I’d stain some bamboo screen or something and put that over it
by (630 points)
@trinia Robinson I thought it looked those blue pallets you see on trucks

Exactly what I thought it was

Could you compromise and see if there is a colour they wouldn't mind having or perhaps offer them any left over paint to use on their side so it would give an even coat rather than spill stains x

The bit at the top will defo run through the other side. They are a pain to paint. But do the fence is will be ok just try and not be sloppy x

Paint it. My neighbour painted hers grey and I liked it so much, I ended up painting mine. Ask her if she would to paint your side of the fence with her choice of colour and see what she says?

by (660 points)
If your doing blue I would defo paint again as other looks faded and wouod paint posts white or grey? I can see where your neighbour is coming from, it's like u painting yours blue then them painting theirs red and it seeps thro yours . always best to stay friends with your neighbours , life is much easier lol

Why not get some bamboo fence and stain that blue, then attach it to the fence once its dry? :)

Theyve paid for it so i would respect their wishes! Or put your own fencing up next to it and paint that.

Ok so if you don’t own it and you paint it then it is criminal damage and you open yourself to legal issues. That said if this causes a neighbour dispute then this has to be declared when selling the house and can cause major issues as some mortgage companies won’t lend it this is the case.

Panel or bamboo or trellis your side and paint that, to be honest understand where they coming from, wouldnt want a blue stripey fence either lol

As I understand, one side boundary is yours and the other is your neighbours. If they've asked you not to stain the side that belongs to them, then you can't do it
