First time having a proper garden of my own so need some grass advice please! We have grown some grass (the really green patch) as it was just rock hard mud, and we have put some extra seeds down around it to blend it, we have also just started seeding the corner. My question is the old grass is really dry and yellow as you can see. Any tips on how i can get it greener so it all blends? Its making me sad looking at it thanks in advance!

Thatching and aeriating wouldn't be a bad idea then overseed and water daily xx

@decker20469 sorry i dont know what this is first time having a proper gardenxx

@lasko28 when you thatch you essentially remove some of the underlayer in the grass, get yourself a metal rake (I used a plastic one and made my job much harder :( ) and rake quite aggressively and you'll see dry tufts come out. Only do this like once a year. You can buy an aerator which makes little holes in the ground to help with drainage. Once you do that, get some seeds and put them all over, get some fresh top soil and put that over it and rake over to spread it evenly then gently pat it down. Once you do all that just water it daily and keep it nice and moist. Don't cut it for a few weeks while your new grass is growing :) hope this helps xx

You can also use grass feed too to help with your soil quality x

@decker20469 ah that is brilliant thanks so much! We have plenty of soil and seeds anyway from growing the patches through xx

@lasko28 you've done amazingly with the grass you've already grown so you'll smash it! :) good luck xxx

Plenty of water in this dry time. What’s it been cut with? Looks like it’s been strimmed?
by (220 points)
@cecelia8263 weve just got a sprinkler to use on it, it was cut with a lawn mower and strimmer for the edge near the sleeper

@lasko28 ok I’d recommend scarifying it and over seeding it in that case.

Would we need to put top soil on the grass first? Then seeding over it and keeping it nice and wet?
by (180 points)
@lasko28 if you scarify it, it’ll pull all the dead grass out then see what the soil looks like, if it doesn’t look great get a bag of top soil and rake it out even over the area then seed and lightly sprinkle top soil over just a few hand fulls, just enough to stop birds getting the seeds. Water on dry days, after 6-7 o’clock once the sun is starting to go down

@cecelia8263 thats brilliant thank you! Theres currently loads of weeds in it so we are killing them off first then we will give it a try

I’ve just had the same. I just seeded over and kept it all soaking wet. Oh and stayed off it of course. This is 2 weeks difference.

That looks so much better!

@lasko28 look at the before pic!

@betatron4 what a transformation! Weve just deweeded our sleeper and spent a fortune on plants for it it was before the grass was cut so excuse that in the picture

@lasko28 mine was laziness and then denial. Then I just thought f**k it and got someone in to do it.

@betatron4 its so much easier getting someone else to do it, i just love seeing the progress of things

Can I ask wht you used for your raised border please? Ive been looking at scaffold boards but the amount i need its working out quite expensive
by (220 points)
@helaine its scaffold boards, it was here before we moved here. We just added a basic plank from b and q on the end to cut it off

I would get a grass rake, get all the old out of it, will probably leave it looking bare, then mix seed with very small amount of topsoil and oversees the lawn, remember to keep watering 3/4 times a day especially while it’s really warm! I’ve not long done mine which looked a lot like yours and it’s looking great now xxx
by (220 points)
@davisdavison716 a few people have recommended this so we will give it a go! We have weeds in the grass first that im going to kill off before i do anythingxxx
by (820 points)
@lasko28 still a few patches to go over in mine over next few weeks, going to cut for the first time tomorrow and see what it’s like! The other side is the same but huge improvement on before! Get some roundup lawn weed killer, fab stuff literally just gets rid of the weeds and not the grass xx

That is exactly what weve got, need to do it on wednesday as weve just cut the grass. Yours is looking amazing! xx

Give it a really good rake off . Then a fine layer of compost and reseed it. Water well for about a week and then it should start growing again. OR feed and weed it for a quick fix
