Does anyone else call non emergency NPD when someone parks their car blocking the sidewalk? I’ve called several times and resident doesn’t seem to get the memo. Happening at Keeney and Harlem, forcing kids to ride off sidewalk behind resident car on Harlem, which I find unsafe. they have a whole 2 car garage, or could park parallel to their garage or could park on the street. If anyone else lives around here and would be willing to also call and report the issue, maybe they will finally park legally and not block the sidewalk?!? Thanks in advance. Love our Niles.

Is riding on his lawn not an option? That’ll annoy the piss out of him and make him stop maybe. They shouldn’t have to go into the street.

Maybe try leaving a note asking them to not block sidewalk so kids can ride? I don't know.

You should let Niles police know. That's dangerous for the kids

You must be my neighbor because I know the exact house you’re talking about!

I have made this complaint to NPD when I lived off of Harlem and Lill. They told me those people don't have the option of parking on the street, so they have to park in their driveways *eyeroll*

I think you should call the Niles PD. That is not okay.

This is happening in many driveways in Niles! Big vans are blocking the sidewalk path and kids either have to go on grass area or street, I have seen the police cars drive by scoping the neighborhood and did not do anythingplease Niles police when not busy please make an effort for our children and grandchildren safety to stop and approach the home owner with at least a verbal warning!

Crap on NPD. I parked in front of my house and placed right side tires on curb walk as street is narrow. Got a ticket. I wasn’t blocking sidewalk use or making it hazardous and it’s a side street. Call them any time walk is blocked. Call again if not resolved in short amount of time.

Blocking the sidewalk is illegal. Call the NPD.

I would think if you place a call to NPD, they would al least come out, look & take it from there as far as issuing a ticket, warning, whatever.

@jelly just knock on the door and ask them to park differently. Don’t be a snake and call pilice

Christopher Norton I’ve tried that approach but was berated with vile & vulgar language. People think they own the sidewalk in front of their homes, when in fact it’s part of the village’s easement.

Christopher Norton those days are gone because nobody seems to be able to handle being called out for being a shithead and breaking simple laws. They either respond like @ban3 said. or worse.

@equipoise it’s sad

Christopher Norton yup. You see it with people that let their kids behave like feral cats as well. God forbid you look disapprovingly upon their precious little butterfly.

I agree with you Kate. It’s a sideWALK not sidePARK.

NPD wrote me a ticket for blocking the sidewalk last Mother’s Day at 12:45 AM. correct. AM. Came home and neighbor was having a family party so no street parking. Didn’t think it would be a problem since it was after 10pm. well I guessed wrong

It all depends on who they know when it comes to enforcing the rules.

Why aren't they being ticketed?

Someone parked their car across our driveway and the police said they couldn’t do anything.
by (3.6k points)
@raffia8 why not?
by (1k points)
@hourglass8022 they said the street is public property
by (840 points)
@raffia8 yes when somebody partially blocked our driveway because of the Notre Dame football game, we called the cops. And this rookie pulls up looks at it and says “ you got enough room to back out. ” My husband was livid.

Maybe a kid should ride their bike into the car a few times. Jk, but I really dislike entitled people that do stuff like that. And it stinks that the npd doesn’t do anything about it.

Village ordinance states you cannot block the sidewalk or park on the parkway like this jerk has done for decades.

Call the Village Hall. They were quick to give me a citation because my garbage cans were in front of my house by the street, because I was trying to prevent unwanted cars That didn’t belong there, in front of my house! I had called the police but they couldn’t do anything about it! I realize the street doesn’t belong to me but they would drive on my grass and dig their tires into the mud, very disgusting and rude.

The wheels of one of our cars were on the driveway, but the back end was over the sidewalk maybe 6-8". We were ticketed for obstructing the sidewalk. Yet the neighbor parks his work truck over the sidewalk all the time and has room to pull up, but doesn't. It's amazing how the laws only apply to some not all.

Isn’t there also a Niles Ordinance concerning children w riding bikes on sidewalks? Also an ordinance about dogs needing to be on leashes and cleaning up crap after your dogs? My point is that each person could find something they don’t like about every single person in our community. Do your part to take care of your own behaviors.

@anchorage but a kid on a bicycle or a pile of poop isn't going to prevent a person in a wheelchair from getting from point A to point B like a car in the middle of the sidewalk.

Not true. I was in a wheel chair for over two years and fighting the local youth who could not respect the wheel chair needing the sidewalk. Again point is that most people are using this site to gripe about everything and anything they can find. I am sure there is something we can each find about every single person we come in contact with. There is enough stress we are all going through without adding more. If each person makes sure they are being respectful of other persons then there is less stress.
