@margheritamargi I’m actually looking into here but have not even started looking. We did a quarter steer and my friend took a quarter. Her parents did the other half. At the time we had a family of 4 and it was tons of meet and we could pick the cuts!

@territoriality what size freezer do you have?
by (6.6k points)
@margheritamargi I had a small deep freeze at the time. I regret selling it now. We got it from Costco

We have from a place in WI. It's organized by a friend. We bought a half. I'd do it again but it's kind of a pain and requires a lot of freezer space.
by (2.4k points)
@discourtesy why is it a pain? Just so I know what I’m getting myself into LOL
by (1.3k points)
@margheritamargi you have to pay up front. Not a huge deal but it's an investment. Then on the day of delivery you have to be available to pick up when the truck shows up. Then you have to unpack it and pack it back up into your own freezer. Gosh I sound whiny lol. It's not a huge deal just that day of delivery its kind of a pain. Then remembering what you have, etc. The last time I just bought a case of ground beef. We don't eat a lot of red meat. I'd buy a portion again in the future because the quality is great.

@discourtesy ahhhh thank you! Great info about remembering what meat. I’m a spreadsheet nerd lol

@margheritamargi my friend just makes a list ad taped it to the freezer. crosses out things when she uses them. also on delivery she separates everything into meal size or double meal size. example is she divides 2 lbs of ground beef into half pond servings and then freezes

Yes. When we lived in Nebraska we raised our own. And slaughtered them when it was time. So for us the cost was on going but rewarding and made up for it in the end. Due to quality assurance and the fact we did sell portions off to our friends to make up some cost. The initial cost is expensive because you are purchasing a lot at one time compared to weekly grocery shopping. But going forward I will always purchase this way.

We do a 1/4 cow from a farmer south of Champaign where I grew up. Having it processed and packaged is so much cheaper than buying it as you need from stores. It lasts us a year. We do the same thing with hogs. Having a deep freezer is a must though!

We bought half a cow last February from a place up in Wisconsin. Definitely worth it. But like someone said in a previous comment you need a lot more freezer space than what you think you will need. We still have meat , and it’s been over a year !

I did. We did through a family friend but it was a super deal. We bought 1/2 and split with 3 neighbors each yielding about 75 pounds of meat. Lasts a long time. worth it!

@margheritamargi here is the info I got from @territoriality Stewart of Stewart farms. Hope it We do that! but we don’t have any finished black angus ready for 3 months or so. If you want to give her my number, She can text me andI can put her down for one then. The cost ends up being around 3. 50 a pound with the processing. Usually around 150 to 200 pounds of packaged meat. They get to choose what cuts and how they want it all done. That would include your roasts, steaks, stew meat soup bones all that stuff. We do have a lot of ground beef in stock right now. We have 2 pound packages of 1/3 pound hamburger patties, 1 pound bulk ground beef and 5 pound bulk ground beef. We are processing orders and people can pick them up in the foyer of the farm. It is four dollars per pound, a reduced price, trying to help out where we can with everything that’s going on. If she want something, let me know and let me know when she can pick it up and we will leave it for her. We take checks or cash, either way is fine. Last thing - we do have a few other cuts of meat in stock, we are selling them at the same price per pound, if there’s anything specific she wants we can check, definitely been selling a lot of beef! And we’ve only been doing word-of-mouth to family friends and neighbors etc. Feel free to spread the word, we do have a lot in stock it’s just not every single cut.

Yes. We do a quarter of a cow for a family of four and locally in sugar grove. Honestly, if you can afford to do it upfront and have a deep freezer, so much better and cheaper also in long run. Only way we do (or try to do, bummer when we run out and have to wait a bit for next cow) beef now.

We have bought a quarter cow (grass fed) and a half hog a few times. Definitely worth it. Be sure you have enough freezer space. Our cow lasted us a year.

@olfactory thank you! My husband looked into freezers yesterday and the earliest we can get one delivered is July ‍♀️ lol

Yes, I buy a quarter every year for 2 adults and 3 kids 13 and under. It lasts us most of a year. I buy mine from Sol Gardens but there are a number of other options locally! I forget how much beef I usually get from my quarter - 120 lbs? and most of it fits on 2 shelves of my my upright freezer, leaving of space for other foods. price per pound for conventional beef (not organic, grassfed, etc), is usually around $3-$3. 50/lb of hanging weight, which is not the same thing as the take home weight. The awesome thing is that while you might pay an average total cost around $3. 5/$4 of take home weight, that's the same price for ALL cuts, including steaks and roasts, which are usually more expensive/lb at the grocery store when you buy by the piece.

Yes, it was from a farmer near St. Louis. $2 per pound and it lasted a family of 3 almost a year. I did end up giving away some of the cuts I didn't care for but it was the BEST beef.
