I've been wondering lately how to know if the companies managing my retirement funds are sound. I have some in Ameritrade, American Funds, and I have used Robinhood for non retirement investing. How "safe" are these managers?

I'm no expert on this but I think if a firm folds you still own the stocks.

As long as the investments are FDIC or SIPC insured, you don’t have to worry about the broker you have them through.
