You should use an Ethernet cable to connect the hub to the router.

If you have it connected to your router via ethernet, then it doesn't need to be on wifi. If you want to put it on wifi, disconnect it from the ethernet cable and use the SmartThings app to set it up.

You have two options for connecting your SmartThings Hub to the internet. One is Wi-Fi the other is an Ethernet cable. Whenever you have a choice between Wi-Fi and Ethernet than choose Ethernet. Once you get the hub setup it will be communicating with services (cloud) from several sources. An Ethernet connection is faster, more secure and not subject to interference from your neighbors Wi-Fi and devices in your home such as a microwave. Your choice

is yours not finding wifi or just getting stuck when it tries to update firmware? Mine kept sitting at 0 percent and wouldn't do the initial firmware update. Took some playing around.

Don’t plug into the router if you want a Wi-Fi connection.
