I’ve been using ST for about six years now. I got my house setup the way I wanted and I haven’t messed with it much since. That being said, I’m still using the first gen hub. Question 1: Should I consider switching to V2 or V3? Question 2: If I switch would I have to start from scratch with all my automation?

If your like me, I spent a lot of time perfecting the rules, that even if I recall everything it would still be a major pain. I only have about 30 devices. Zwave +, might make me rethink that, but I’m not sure if it’s true, but I also read to get the benefit from zwave +, everything has to be Zwave +. However you likely will have to upgrade at some point, but there might be a better hub by that time.

V3. When your v1 dies but if inwere going to switch the fact v1 is no longer receiving updates id be planning the move. Automation not necessarily, depending on where it lives, but you will have to reset all of your ZWave abd Zigbee devices and therefore any automation that uses them will have to be fixed.

I am still using V1 as well, I looked at switching to V2, even bought one when they came out, but the lack of a migration kept me from doing it.

That makes sense. One of the reasons I started thinking about this is that (if I remember correctly) V1 doesn’t support Zwave plus, which means I can’t send firmware updates to my devices. is that correct?

1) Yes, you should consider it. Having considered it, you could reasonably reject it for the moment, but as part of the decision making process you might like to document your current set up because . 2) You are pretty much starting from scratch reinstalling Zigbee and Z-Wave devices and your automations that use them will all need attention.

Write down or screenshot the automations so the logic isn’t forgotten or lost. Then it’s just a matter of reentering it during a migration or failure.

@supine was a general statement. Migration meant to mean either manual or automated move.

I will say with all of Wink's faults at least you could migrate from Hub 1 to Hub 2. When I switched to ST I just assumed you could do the same. Not sure why they put all the effort into a new app without offering a Hub migration path first. Not very future proof.

Screen shot, print out every Smart app and automation then clear your schedule for a couple of days.

1) it’s definitely worth considering, especially if SmartThings delivers on their new rules API running local later this year. 2) yes

If starting over I'd suggest the newest V3 hub for the simple reason that it'll be supported the longest. ST has been supporting their hubs for a long time (probably because they have no backup/restore/migrate functionality) but the latest is still likely to be supported the longest.
