*LONG background plus questions* Hey All! I handle all of the bills and money for our household! I am beginning to work on setting a budget for my fiancé and I. My paycheck is a set $800/month($200/week). My fiancé’s on the other hand is not a set amount. He makes anywhere from $1500-$2100/month. We honestly don’t have many bills(just phone bill, his truck & insurance, and credit cards). We always have extra money but I’m so bad about deciding how much to take out and put up for savings. We have separate banking accounts as well but I’m able to move money between our accounts. My account automatically moves $1/day to savings, $20 on the 8th of every month, and $5 to my Roth IRA. He doesn’t have anything like that set up. Since we don’t have a common account it’s harder for me to just take money out of his account for savings without knowing exactly how much he’s going to get paid and what extra expenses he’s going to have pop up that he will need money for on the spot. So I usually just get out his half of the bills. We need to save for our wedding(2 more years ), our 8 month old’s fund, building our “big house”(we are doing tiny house living rn), and our emergency fund. This has been a 4 year habit of me not taking out of his money for savings and we are really at a spot that it’s become more necessary. We do have a cash savings but it’s not separated into different categories, I guess it could be categorized as emergency? Oh and I’m a part time college student and will be a licensed real estate agent hopefully by the end of the month. SO, after all of that background how do I budget for savings when his pay is unpredictable? Does he need to get out a set cash amount? Do I need to set a budget for the wedding now? If you’ve read this far thank you!

I would pick a percentage of his pay rather than a set amount if it varies a lot. For sure start a wedding fund now as most venues require a deposit when booking to hold the spot, as well as many other vendors.
