I'm wondering if anyone has included extra items in their budgets for pandemic planning? I'm off to Costco tomorrow to stock up on a few things.

A friend posted this today on FB. That is at Costco in Seattle. Good luck tomorrow!

@tara387 Costco doesn’t. Sams does and that’s why it’s my favorite

@sharpshooter see I’d rather not put myself in that crowd when we are worried about a pandemic ‍♀️ I’m doing my normal shopping, through grocery pickup. If I need stuff I can order for delivery from many places.
by (520 points)
@sharpshooter that’s a regular Saturday at most Costco stores here in the PNW but it was mentioned in the news tonight, especially with the recent death here.

The Costco in Bonney Lake, WA isn’t that bad. I grew up going to the one in Tukwila, absolutely awful.

@stated exactly right! I live up by the border so we get WA and Canadians coming down and I imagine it’s just nuts this weekend

I bought extra formula, diapers & wipes. I'm hoping to stock up on formula water, Lysol wipes & foods tomorrow. I'd like to have a good amount of meats & veggies in the freezer.

My prep is 2 international trips being cancelled. I’m postponing a vacation with my mom to Ireland and Rome but only because she’s had some respiratory health issues and pneumonia. I don’t want to risk her getting it. Outside of that? Nah. Do you stock up for the flu?
by (10.1k points)
@episode I’ll allow you to do your own research. This is a budgeting group and this string has gotten off topic. I didn’t proclaim to be an expert. I am doing what is best for me, as you should for you.
by (1.5k points)
@siskind I starting planning a trip of a lifetime to Paris and Venice for this October. My heart was broken when I heard abt Notre Dame and my heart is breaking for Venice now. but I refuse to live in fear and will NOT cancel my trip unless it gets very dire. Having said that, for the first time ever, I got "trip insurance". I finally realized you never know what life will throw at ya!
by (10.1k points)
@glaucescent I work in travel and almost never get insurance ‍♀️ but i did this time. It’s a trip of a lifetime here too! My mom has never traveled internationally and this will be her first. She had mild pneumonia and is on antibiotics still for some lingering lung infection. If she wasn’t going, I would still go to Ireland (Italy is basically cutting people off now) and England. I just don’t want to put my mom in jeopardy when her immune system is already working OT. We’ll reschedule for later this year and it will all be good!
by (1.8k points)
No one has died from the flu or from the actual coronavirus. Those two things are separate, yes, but they don’t kill people. Secondary complications like pneumonia are what kill people-and it’s people that legit everyone will say “had underlying health issues”. So ALREADY IMMUNOCOMPROMISED. ALREADY SICK. then they get the coronavirus or the flu and bam, here comes that virus PLUS lets tack on some pneumonia or asthma or shortness of breath that exacerbates. Then you die. You do NOT die from the actual viruses. This is it directed at Megan, but others who think this virus or the flu virus actually does the killing.
by (1.5k points)
@siskind I live by myself and have no health issues and no children so I'm not worried for myself. Now my pregnant sister lives in Florida wth my 82yr dad, my BIL who is a smoker and diabetic, 18yr old niece wth asthma, 3yo and 1yo nephews, each wth a variety of allergies. their home can be a germ factory lol. I DO worry abt them a little.

I spent 100$ from sinking funds for water, one huge box of diapers for each of my kiddos, big box of wipes, 12 cans of macaroni beef/ravioli, 12 cans veggies, a few bags of 15 bean soup, a jar of peanut butter, and a large box of granola bars. We have a decent amount of pantry food but I always something separate and to the side as more of an emergency stockpile.

We’ve been planning for this for about 10 years, and hosting a little party with giveaways for some of our dearest friends  but every year when we’ve gotten a tax return, we keep adding to our go bags. I will be starting a sinking fund to replenish supplies a year from now.
by (3.2k points)
Lol, no we’re not. Just like to be prepared in case of any emergencies or evacuations mostly. There’s a lot of fires in our area, so I make sure we have our basic necessities, docs and a few survival items. We have a shelter in place for three up to days ( which is not much) but better than nothing) and go bags.
by (3.2k points)
@convulsive yes! We get a lot of wind, many in our area lost power for over a month in devastating storms.
by (2k points)
@supercilious833 yep my husband is super into emergency preparedness because we get a lot of natural disasters here. We have a whole closet of food storage and intense go bags

@monafo I'm not sure why you would say that . I'm not sure how old you are , but I'm guessing you were born before 2009 . That's when the H1N1 pandemic was , I'm sure you wouldn't say you wish you hadn't made it through that one . I lived through that one and the H3N2 pandemic in 1968 . People my parents age also lived through the H2N2 pandemic of 1957-58 . My grandpa lived through the huge 1918 flu pandemic as well as the 1957-58 , and 1968 one's . I'm planning on surviving this one too .

Maybe I’m naive or just don’t watch the news enough but why is everyone stocking up on stuff ? I went to Costco the other day and it was insanely packed but all i need was rotisserie chicken and some fruit lol are people quarantining themselves inside and not going out ? What if you have kids in school ? We’ve kept up the same routine even before flu season, added in some extra boosts if vitamins for flu season, but what are we supposed to be doing different now ? Not being rude just honestly curious what the panic is.
by (2.7k points)
@bertero Turner What I don’t understand is the need for bottled water ‍♀️ it’s not an earthquake it’s a virus
by (11.1k points)
@bertero Turner people aren’t quarantining themselves but are preparing in the event that a quarantine is declared and they find themselves needing to stay home and unable to go out. There’s also some fears about supply chains being affected by all this. My husband wanted to stock up just in case and even then we prepped for like 2 weeks and not like months on end. But other than that, we’re continuing on with our normal lives and if anything our grocery bill will be light for awhile
by (2.7k points)
@waal43178 OMG, if that is the situation what the heck are two cases of water going to do? I guess I am lucky then. I can boil my swimming pool water. People really need to calm down, more people die of the flu each year and yet people don’t vaccinate ‍♀️anyway, best of luck to you, hope you and your family stay healthy ❤️

So, I’ve been paring down how much we buy of everything because we’re moving from San Diego to Chicago in about 3 months and I’d like to use up as much of what we have as possible prior to moving. That said, I did buy more than I have been recently but no more than I did prior to preparing to move if that makes sense. It’s a preparation of worst case scenario not because I worry about the virus but because I know people go into panic mode and stores become madhouses and I’m not trying to deal with all that jazz in the coming weeks. Even with buying “extra” I still came out under my usual food budget so we’re good.

by (5.9k points)
Yes, I'm buying some extra stuff in case of quarantine. I don't think we'll have chaos, but if we need to stay home for a couple of weeks (please no! ), I want to be ready. At work, I have had my department tighten up our file saving policies, doublechecked everyone's emergency contact info, etc. stuff we have in place anyway but just reinforced it. My industry has already been affected by concerns about COVID-19 with major tradeshows being cancelled and clients pulling out of their participation.

Not budgeted for most household items but I am still buying it with my roll over money. because dollar tree, rite aid, Walmart, Albertsons, ALDI’s, Target in my area are all out of Hand sanitizer and face mask. The Costco in my area is also out of bottle water and toilet paper‍♀️. I barely get to grab three hand sanitizer at Albertsons.

Also i don’t know if other Costco does it, but at the entrance, there is wipe available to wipe cart which is normal but a staff is wiping it for us. ‍♀️
by (2.1k points)
@cenis I just was going to comment that- besides wiping down the cart for you, there was also wipes and hand sanitizer throughout the store. I hope they do this all the time.

I live in Washington. Someone just died here on the other side of the state from me. I didnt have a "pandemic" envelope so I didn't buy anything extra. Lol. The whole thing is absurd to me. Yes, we could get sick. But to otherwise healthy people, the corona virus isn't as bad as the flu.
by (4.5k points)

It isn’t a pandemic unless you’re already immunocompromised. Then you should worry. Unless you have cancer, copd, are on dialysis, or have some other form of immunocompromising condition, your corona virus will be just like a cold maybe as bad as the flu. But your chances of dying from it are slim.

We don’t purchase anything out of the ordinary when this kinda stuff happens. My husband does have a stocked go bag with basic medical and caloric needs should we need a quick out. It’s a survival bag in its most minimalist form but we do need to beef it up now that we’ve got two kids. Plus the one that stayed in my car was stolen a few years ago so he’s gotta make me a new one. It usually has things in it to get me by for two or three days, just long enough for him to get to me or me to get somewhere safe.

I just doubled up on a few things I normally get because people are buying out everything and replenished what i was low on  I coupon a few times a year anyway and shop the target gift cards deals when I’m low stock. Also sams club has join for $45, get $45 so I stocked up on my beans and basics.

Whether you think it is necessary or not. supplies are running out. Companies can not keep hand sanitizers or masks stocked. Other items too. It doesn’t hurt to build emergency kits and home pharmacies. I personally work at Target and any sanitizer we stock is gone so quickly.

Also tip for those at Target, if you don’t see any on the store hop on our app and order some for store pick up. We have some in the back room sometimes

5000 people have died from the flu this year! Why is everyone freaking out about the coronavirus?! Do you know the coronavirus is a form of the common cold? We have all had it sometime in our life. Go about life like you would trying to avoid the flu. Don’t touch your face. Stop freaking out and joining into the media’s fear campaign. Isn’t it amazing that if you ask ANY doctor they are not worried?! I work for one and he is so tired of the media spreading fear. Just take “normal” precautions like you do during flu season. It will be ok.

@abijah1 I know right
by (560 points)
Very well said! 100% agree
by (1.6k points)
@abijah1 on annual basis, 45 million people are infected with the flu virus of which 60 thousand end in death. Have you looked at the statistics for mortality rates for coronavirus? Compared it to the statistics for SARS? Why are we acting like we all have the means for treatment (we dont have a cure), the money to stay hospitalized or at home. Honey people are being QUARANTINED. Do you see people which flu having the same issue? Sit back if you want, I say its not fear so much as staying informed and prepared.

The reason to prepare: 1. You or a family member in your house could be quarantined. 2. If you or another family member gets it, you can be quarantined even longer. 3. Disruptions in supplies, from China to the US 4. Have you ever been through a snow storm or hurricane and everyone buys supplies and nothing is left? Yeah, that’s going to happen. It already is. 5. Preparing isn’t about freaking out or being afraid, you should already be doing it anyway.

The flu is a bigger issue to me than Corona. However. Nothing surprises me in our society anymore and if I get quarantined I want some extra water. And Doritos.  Also, a lot of products come from China and we’ll see the effects of that in a month or two. Yes, I’m stocking up on a few things. I wash my hands like crazy anyway, but being more vigilant now. I keep a glove in my car to pump gas anyway so I never have to touch that filthy pump.

Ok so my friend messaged me yesterday saying get to water from Costco as I was on my way there. She proceeded to tell me that ppl are getting ready to not leave there house because of this and I’m in Toronto! And the reallll kicker is my friend her 11 month old babe and her fiancé left for KOREA 2 days ago. So she is a nurse and all three have been wearing masks. She is getting married there in 2 weeks! There goes yr wedding makeup cause I be wearing a mask the whole time. There is 80000 reported cases in south and North Korea!
by (2.1k points)
There are less then 2500 cases in south Korea, north korea as not given any numbers. Your numbers are pure speculation.
by (6.2k points)
@nauru oh so weird I was just watching CNN and it says 88000 reported. REPORTED do I need to say it louder. I never said anything else but REPORTED so in Florida there is 19 REpORTEd cases with 5 in Quarantine! I’m not sure why u need to come and comment like that. I would say. Hey where did u get those numbers from cause I can’t seem to find them where I am looking
by (1.7k points)
@nauru I just looked at the totals that were posted yesterday, and there were over 3, 500 But definitely not 80, 000
by (2.1k points)
Reported world wide. i comment because i believe we need to be correct when giving out numbers.
by (1.7k points)
@wed54309 those numbers change hour by hour. 3, 500 in Korea and as of 9 hours ago they added 300+ more, but 24 hours ago they added 800+ more
by (6.2k points)
@nauru but reported just means that a person goes to hospital saying they are sick so they test for it. 3500 is the number of ppl that actually have it. Like where I live there has been a couple reported but only 1 person has it
by (6.2k points)
@quadri1366 gross still! I prob would be cancelling my wedding!

It’s a good idea to stock up. The CDC has advised the USA to prepare for mass closures as a result of so many people getting sick in the near future. They anticipate lack of employees to run essential necessities like water, electricity and gas. As well as pharmacies, hospital, doctors offices and urgent cares being unable to cope with lack of employees and overwhelming amounts of sick Individuals. Not to mention lack of supplies to treat those individuals. Which may cause some panic. So yeah. Get the water, get the canned goods, get extra cold remedies and prescriptions cuz while this virus is mostly mild in those under 60 without other underlying diseases, nearly everyone will be coming down with the worst damn cold they’ve ever had.

Look, everybody has to prepare or not, as they see fit. We don't know what COVID-19 will turn into. I hope it ends up as just another illness we deal with like everything else, but we don't know quite yet. It's a good idea to be ready for emergencies anyway, so if this prompts you to do that or to shore up your supplies, it's as good a reason as any. For those saying "it's just a cold and healthy people will be fine", there are a lot of people with pre-existing conditions who hope that everyone chooses public safety over their own desire not to be too bothered. Because there is no vaccine and no cure. Do what you will for your own prep plans, but please follow whatever safety plans are put into place to prevent its spread. Thank you. Off my soapbox.

Plus the CDC said that everybody should have two weeks of food and water, and medications, just in case the worst should happen. If the worst doesn’t happen, then my family just has an abundance of what will need at some point anyway.

Stocking up on nothing. both my bf and i both work in an emergency room, i had a high suspect pt friday night. i was told there is no mask shortage, however they’re locking up the n95s and hiding droplet masks behind the nurses station because people are thieving boxes

@laclair15843 we have a family member that lives in Seattle, she is an epidemiologist and previously worked for the CDC. Her message to us was “wash your hands, stay home when sick and don’t seek health care unless you really need it. Don’t buy masks. ”

@monafo this ! Ugh. We’ve been through all this before . SARS, bird flu, Zika virus . . People need to chill and do exactly what you just said.

While not panicking it may be worthwhile to put aside a few basics as you would for a hurricane like water, non perishable food and lysol as ppl are starting a panic a bit (not that lysol is helpful during a strom lol). I'm trying not to feed the fear, in fact I really didnt care much about it until last night. same with swine flu, sars etc. Don't panic but we aware. Really, if you look into the statistics it is similar to the flu. most survive, but there are those that are immuno-compromised and the elderly that is really effecting.

Don't panic but be aware because other people will panic and stores will empty out quickly. I'm in Florida and we try to always be stockpiled because it's just a matter of one news report to empty the stores of bread and water.

We stocked up on extra household supplies, food and water. Tho it’s not in our state at this time. If and when it does I don’t want to be out with a toddler getting things last minute and exposing ourselves. We had money left over in the budget and used that.

I'm thinking that all the grocery stores will likely still deliver.

I’m just adding a few extra canned goods and water. Don’t let gas tank get below 1/2 tank. I live in Indiana and had never had “disaster” by me. Until hurricane Ike. It created a wind storm that knocked out my power for a week. So now that we are entering tornado season I try to stock up on things for that. This just happens to coincide with the corona virus. I need to get my grill propane tank filled too. Always make sure I have plenty of ice in my freezer.

They say toilet paper is the first thing going. We have some put back. If you can find fave masks and gloves get them while you can because they are also on the top of the list of being bought out!

@wince TP is the one thing I cannot run out of. Mostly because I live by myself and it happened once. Never again. I have enough TP for an apocalypse at any given time
by (490 points)
@siskind I have ibs and some other stomach issues so I feel you on this. I made sure to put a few cases back.
by (10.1k points)
@wince  i did Just buy some cat litter too because I’m not feeling like running out of that and not being able to get any. Priorities here (and as you can see, there’s a theme here)
by (490 points)
@siskind oh my gosh I didn’t even think of this! I have 3 indoor cats and two dogs. I was so worried about getting us hooked up. ‍♀️

@wince in all honesty, I just needed some. But my target drive up order today is litter and TP

Out of curiosity, why would bottled water be out if people are pandemic planning?
by (1.6k points)
@elbrus in Houston people ran to it because we had a main water break over the week so while I cant explain the rest of the country; in here it was very much reasonable haha
by (13.8k points)
Your tap water isn't always drinkable. Right my my town is on a boil notice. So frankly while I know it's wasteful I still find it easier to just get bottled.
by (2.5k points)
@wince Murphy @stylite Makes sense. We're on a well in the middle of no where. So we've never had that.
by (10.4k points)
@elbrus my parents live near a small town and the pipes started cracking and they found bacteria growing and getting in the water. The whole town had to go without water for a month so they could fix all the underground pipes. The water wasn't even safe to shower in. The state brought in free water by the gallons for everyone. Glad they fixed the problem.

@undercroft3 that makes sense. But just for pandemic reasons i was curious. We're on our own water supply.

I can't get any hand sanitiser where I live in the UK. Hoping they will restock at the beginning of this week and kicking myself for not getting more before now. I was fairly chilled about it until my best friend told me someone has been tested 4 doors down from her, I am immuno-compromised so I just want to be careful
by (1.6k points)
@armenta @cawley pregnant here so I am very concerned. Trying to just go about my normal amount of stocking and taking an extra precaution or two by buying extra disinfectant.

I'm in UK and tbh I am not buying more than normal. I always have an extra of each for the cleaning material and i have cans of veg and some other foods that are in my emergency stock and basically covers about a month of meals for me and 3 kids. I do rotate the cans so make sure no expired ones etc. And so far it works. I started doi g it last summer after my income was messed up. My mom kept going at me as to build up pantry and get it filled blablabla and I was always like I just buy what I need when I need it but she kept on going so was like ok yeah whatever and got it filled. only for half way through the next pay day to be told that I would not get paid for number of weeks as were changing system and new dates and all sorts

Keep watching that fear porn called MSM. Only thing I’m stocking up on is food n gas cuz ppl act a fool when they are afraid. I have a berkey water filter with 10 extra filters. Bottled water is as bad as tap.

@deach dont freak out. Remain calm. See if its anywhere close to you or if people in your circle have traveled, buy a little extra canned and dry goods if you were to stay inside for a bit. Youll be fine. ❤
