I really want to invest in myself and my future buying self development books to do with finances and starting a business etc. But i cant justify the price that I will be spending on the first order even though I know and many would say 'you cant put a price on investing in yourself'. What do I do? Bite my tongue and buy now or wait and still have that want to buy them? I wanna start a side hustle and just get back on my grind.

In my humble opinion, maybe start a sinking fund?  I know when I wait and save the buyers guilt I carry goes away. It's also an exercise for me to be patient. God knows I need it lol
by (3.8k points)
@retardant I need to learn patience too. I think I will do that.

There are apps you can download (I like Hoopla and Libby) if you have a library card you can borrow the digital version there. They have most of the books I’ve looked for.

Get audible app!
by (3.8k points)
@malamut im not into audible but could you please tell me how it works? Do you get to keep the books?
by (3.4k points)
@vicegerent yeah you keep. Or if you start one and don’t like it you have a certain amount of time to exchange it. It’s like $15 a month and you get one book credit. I drive a lot (before corona and I’m working from home) so i listen to lots of audio books
by (3.8k points)
Do you get to buy heaps of books in that month? Is it all covered in that 15 a month
by (3.4k points)
@vicegerent no it’s one credit for one book. There are other plans with more credits. I’m not sure the pricing on those you would have to check out the website

Kindle ebooks are often cheaper, and they don’t clutter my place.

Look at a subscription to Scribd. $8. 99 USD/mo and both the books you have listed above are available. You also get audio books, sheet music and more. If you do subscribe you get perks like Pandora Premium for free. I've been loving Scribd since this pandemic started and our library is closed.

Does your library offer digital copies? Ours here does, maybe check into that
by (270 points)
Yes try this. Our local library uses hoopla digital and we get 15 free read/audiobooks a month
by (910 points)
@novercal My library uses overdrive and will even lend out books in the kindle format. It’s free. There is usually a wait, but my library lets me put 10 books on hold at a time and can checkout for 21 days with 1 renewal. Best part. No late fees when the time expires.
by (2.4k points)
@variorum mine does the same

I’m a counselor so I’m constantly buying and reading these type of books. for every situation. I use audible and they have a feature where you can return the book if it’s within a year. So I listen and then trade it for the next book I want.

@copeland81363 no our library is closed due to lockdown
by (1.8k points)
@vicegerent Our library has ebooks we can check out. Via kindle or other reading apps. Since these are newer books they will most likely be on that service. Can you try that?
by (3.8k points)
Yup I will have a look

Look into free methods: Library Hoopla/Overdrive/Libby App's Cheaper places like: FB Marketplace (buy used or borrow) Used copies via Amazon/Ebay I was spending SO much money on books and after I'd read them I'd never look at them again. and some, in all honesty, weren't as good as I expected/wanted. I've saved SO much money by using the above methods. I try hard to do a free route first and told myself if it's something I just NEED to have or would find useful looking back at, then I can buy it used (although, so far this year I haven't found one I needed to purchase. )

Try our local library. Mine has an app, hoopla. You can take out up to 8 books a month. It’s so great! I also subscribe to audiobooks.

I agree with libraries and library apps, but I would also recommend podcasts! There are so many informational podcasts out there that are great listens! They have great guest speakers who can provide a lot of insight.

For books that I am not sure if I like I use the library (the digital versions). For business books that I know I will keep I buy them a few at a time and I am still very picky about which ones I purchase.
by (3.8k points)
I can't decide which books to purchase now and which ones to purchase later. I will still get them all but I can't decide I've heard good things about all the books.

Have you considered audio books? Cheaper and you can be productive while listening!
by (3.8k points)
I like to be hands on and actually flick thru pages that's the only thing. I only invest in books that I see potential in, I personally don't like hoarding things.
