We have an older car that keep needing repairs. What is your rule off thumb with car repairs before you get a new car? Curious.

If the repairs are about the same as a car payment!

Depends on if you own the car already or are still making payments. But if you do own it, when it starts averaging the same cost as a monthly payment for a newer car.

If you have enough money to pay for a new car, without going into debt.

We weighed how much we have spent on our van vs how much it was worth vs how much a used one would be. We refuse to have car payments and that was probably the biggest factor in continuing to fix up our 1993 van.

Depends on the type of repairs. If it’s wear and tear things like brakes, struts, wheel bearings, then we’d probably pay to repair. To us, it’s better than a car payment. If it’s repairs because it’s breaking down, We’d probably consider buying a different car.
