Ugh I just have to be sad for a minute with someone lol. I went to make an extra debt payment on my Chase card for 50$ and idk how or if I clicked the wrong thing but the full account balance is now pending and deducted from my PNC checking account for the tune of 8200$. and now I'll be overdrafted over 7000$ with both banks telling me theres nothing they can do until the transaction actually clears. I feel so sick. Anyone ever do this? I just can't believe no one can help me until it clears.
Ugh I just have to be sad for a minute with someone lol.

This happened to me before. I had to wait for the payment to clear. My bank refunded all overdraft charges after reversing the payment. They handled it great! Good luck+!
by (3.2k points)
@homozygote thank you! This gives me hope. I work overnights so I am going to try not to obsessively check my pnc checking account. I just hope all of it bounces and not partial payment
by (1.4k points)
The fraud department is who helped us out the most! Try not to stress - I know, easier said than done! It will work out!

@homozygote thank you!

@faddish7 same! They refunded everything when I accidentally did that once.

Cancel it online! You should be able to do it from the app.
by (3.2k points)
@deplore20462  I can't. its showing as in process on my checking account and on chase it says as deducted.
by (5.8k points)
@faddish7 Did you do it from the “Bill Payment” Area? For chase bill pay I can cancel it from inside the payment section.
by (3.2k points)
@deplore20462 it says it went thru on chase end but it's still pending on my pnc
by (5.8k points)
@faddish7 Ahhh ok because it was done yesterday. If you caught this before midnight yesterday you would have been able to cancel it.
by (2.5k points)
Yes had you caught it same day you could have cancelled. I’ve had to cancel Chase payments before and you can usually do it before a certain cut off time.
by (3.2k points)
@deplore20462 aggghhhh darnit.

I’m surprised they allowed your account to overdraft that amount. I accidentally paid the balance on my amazon account and the payment was rejected due to nsf.
by (3.2k points)
@salter god I am hoping it bounces.
by (750 points)
@faddish7 I hope it does too!
by (3.5k points)
It should. Most banks have an overdraft limit but I doubt they will allow a $7000 overdraft

@stroh55 ok!
by (1.6k points)
@faddish7 I think someone else mentioned this too but a lot of times it's who you talk too. You may have gotten someone the first time who has never experienced this and was too lazy to work it out with you good luck.
by (16.2k points)
@faddish7 something interesting I found. I would call and speak to the manager
by (2.6k points)
@setscrew9235 It says that the Stop Payment has to be made 3 days BEFORE the payment is scheduled to go through. Obviously she’s already well past that time frame.
by (16.2k points)
@bertie correct, I was advising her to call and speak to the manager while providing extra information I found.

It’s deff going to bounce. I wouldn’t worry
by (480 points)
It's an ACH, not a check. Depending how the account is set up it will overdrawal.
by (770 points)
ACH is basically same as check. It may overdraw but it will deff go back to the balance it was before & they may charge you an NSF fee
by (510 points)
Ach works like a check

PNC will only allow one payment per day, if you make a second payment it will cancel the first. See if Chase has the same rule.
by (1.4k points)
I know this because I did the same thing last month!
by (3.2k points)
I wonder if that would work. it says it went thru on the chase website yesterday but it's still in process on pnc
by (1.4k points)
@faddish7 it has to be the same day, according to PNC.

Your checking account should resect it. Most online transactions over 5000 have to be approved even for bill payments. Also most checking accounts only allow a 500 overdraft limit.

I have done this myself with Amazon. You should call up and say something, they can help you and will refund the money to you, but it might take longer than it took you to make the payment.
by (13.6k points)
@thumbscrew she did call, they can’t do anything until it actually posts at PNC

I'm pretty sure it'll be returned for NSF. I made an extra debt payment of $400 and drew it from the wrong account. Unfortunately I paid for my mistake at a tune of $65 in fees but it worked out and I was able to go in and pay once everything was returned.

@tybi This happened yesterday so it already posted.
by (8.2k points)
@deplore20462 ugh. Can you call them?
by (3.2k points)
@tybi  I did. I called both pnc and chase this morning as soon as I about had a heart attack when I saw it. And both said nothing can do until it actually clears out my pnc checking account. its showing as in process on the pnc side
by (8.2k points)

While pending it’s an easy fix. Call the company you made the payment to and they should be able to cancel it. If not your bank will fix it

by (2.2k points)
I did this exact thing. (Mine was $7800) Once it hit once it tried I thing 3 more times then rejected. I had overdraft off, but still got $29 NSF fees from The credit union. I called both my institution (credit union) and Citi. Citi reversed my fees but i get that panicky feeling. Hugs to you MAMA. All you can do is communicate with both parties and document what everyone says.
by (3.2k points)
@clamp thank you

I Believe it will attempt a few times and then decline the transaction! Then you can call and explain the situation and ask your bank to waive the overdraft fee

I work at a bank! Normally they just can’t do anything with pending transactions but call back once it posts and they can see about options and possibly waiving OD fees. There’s a little more leniency around due to COVID. It will be ok!

Yes I have done similar. I scheduled a payment earlier in the month and scheduled another payment forgetting that I already scheduled. So I paid double. It wasn’t the full balance and my bank account was not overdrawn but I had to get it reversed after posting because I needed the money.

Can you place a stop payment so once it hits it is returned? There is a fee for this but I think our bank charged like $30.
by (3.2k points)
@idiomatic I called PNC they said the stop payment has to be requested 3 days in advance. I don’t get that
by (5.1k points)
@faddish7 The processing takes 3 business days to 100% guarenteed a stop. A stop payment now has a 50/50 chance of returning. I would call back and ask them to place the stop payment and waive the fee. Just remember you need to remove the stop payment before your next payment. I do not work for PNC but this is how I would assist one of my clients with this.

Call the bank and turn off overdraft

by (11.6k points)
Call bank and speak to a manager they can conference the company and get it taken care of . don’t take no for an answer it’s all who you get. I was an was an AT&T customer service manager for many years and if pending it’s far easier. This can be handled if pending or posts and fees can be reversed. Don’t freAk our about it just keep calling and getting it escalated until it’s handled. With covid few places are charging late fees and if anything bounces have screenshots and letters so you can get it reversed and no fees anywhere and no adverse effect on credit report.

I dont even have overdraft protection but pnc has let me overdraft before, which I dont understand. Before TBM I was overdrafting every few months. They just charge 36$/day
by (490 points)
I work at a bank, call the branch and let them know of the mistake and that you need it returned. It will hit an overdraft list once it has fully hit your bank account, and because of the amount, it would likely be returned anyways. It is true you can’t do anything until it hard posts to the account, but it will get worked out!
by (3.2k points)
@ila3 ok thank you!
by (490 points)
No problem at all!
by (3.2k points)
On the phone w the branch. he said it will probably bounce but chase will probably run it again. can’t do anything until it actually goes thru on my account and gets out of in process mode. Ugggg
by (2.5k points)
@faddish7 there are 2 different kinds of overdraft and most people don’t know that! Overdraft with a card is totally different than an ACH or recurring withdrawal. It will most likely bounce based on the balance but you may still be charged an NSF fee. You also need to call chase and tell them you do not want them to run it again!
by (3.2k points)
@grow20 thank you! I totally did not know that. I’m going to call chase and tell them they better not run it again.
by (2.5k points)
@faddish7 You’re welcome! Take a deep breath, we all make these mistakes sometimes!  Once it bounces then you can call them to cancel it I believe.

by (1.6k points)
@mousy I recently paid off a cc using an old checking account inadvertently. The cc just returned the payment and inwas able to then pay correctly. It will work out. As long as you bank confirms it won't hit your account you should be set. I think the cc company would work with you especially if you escalate it to a supervisor or someone if need be. Im sure that was a crappy feeling. Im always afraid I'm going to do this.

This would be the time to not have overdraft protection. Every card I have I’m able to cancel my payment until a certain time. I always get an email of a schedule draft so that would’ve been caught ASAP. I once log into my moms at&t account and paid her entire balance (the balance made me question it) after I submitted the payment I was like, that’s not right check account number and sure enough it wasn’t my bill. ‍♀️ I called my mom like yeah I need you to make a payment for my TV bill and plus send me $200
by (3.2k points)
@smoky yeah my dumbass didn’t open the chase bill pay confirmation email. Ugh. But I don’t even have overdraft turned on. Yet PNC has allowed my account to overdraft before with 36$/day fee. I don’t get it
by (2.2k points)
@faddish7 Go into your account settings and be sure it’s turned off then. Maybe they okay  that transaction before being that it wasn’t that much, but still I would’ve requested to be reimbursed that fee.

Talk about going gazelle intense on paying off your credit card! Chase will probably take the money because they are aweful. And the bank will get money from overdrafts, so they might help you but it’s not in their interest to do so. Do you have money in savings to switch over to cover it? Perhaps your emergency fund? Money from your couch or kids accounts? Whatever money you have stashed away, put it in there. Does anyone owe you money? Collect that. Whatever you bought recently, try to return things to get cash to put back into your account.
by (3.2k points)
@arillode75 I am hoping pnc will help me. The rep I spoke to said that they would because it was an obvious mistake and she said since I'm losing hours at work due to covid they would. hoping it's that easy. I have 6400 saved in an online saving account. I cant transfer funds because I turned that off after someone tried to zelle themself money using my account. By the time I write a check and mobile deposit it wont clear in time. I guess I just have to wait until the morning when it bounces back

I am a bank teller and Unfortunately, you would have to wait until the process is out of pending and have posted to your account. A stop payment cannot be done if the transactions is not posted. However, it will return it due to the amount that it will overdraft account. PNC limit is between $200-$1, 000 depending on your circumstances. I’m sorry about this unfortunate situation that has happened to you!

@faddish7 I think I saw in an earlier comment that you tried to place a stop payment. Call back and complete your stop payment request. If not, this will cause an overdraft , you’ll have to pay the OD fee and it will be counted negatively on your account. Also, the payment will be returned as an NSF and sometimes the other bank will charge a fee. When it’s a stop payment, the OD fee is waived and it doesn’t appear negatively on your checking.

Usually you can cancel it within the app of the credit card if you just did it. or if you call the credit card company they can do it but it’ll still show processing

@sazerac9685 Croft wont let me. and chase is zero help at all.

I have done this  It was only for 4500. I got hit with over draft fee that got refunded but it wiped out our savings. AND because my credit rating had changed and because it was 2008 the credit limit on my card went from 5500 to $800. It was super!

Some companies have an option to cancel the payment. I take it yours does not? I accidentally did this with our mortgage payment, but Wells Fargo was able to cancel the transaction.
by (3.2k points)
@tanta unfortunately I guess not. I dont really understand why. I guess I caught it too late

The bank should reject it, you'll have an overdraft fee but it shouldn't go through.

You should be able to go onto the Chase app and cancel your pending payment.

I have done this with my utility bill it was like $75 and I accidentally typed $7500. I had to wait till it cleared and then they returned the money. A little different though because it’s not a credit card and I didn’t actually have any debt. If they don’t return it could you just take out a new advancement from the card?

Talk to your Branch Mgr first thing in the morning they will help you. I am sure since it’s obvious what you did they will be understanding and in a few weeks a funny story! I did something similar and was horrified! The bank manager said stuff like this happens all the time.

For future. . with my local bank you can turn "off" the overdrafting. so you would be choosing for the charge to be declined if it would overdraw your account BUT they said sometimes if you have autodraft monthly payments (ie Netflix) they may still be taken out and possibly overdraw your account Hope you get everything worked out
by (3.2k points)
@schumer44 thank u! I definitely have to ask them about my overdraft because I dont have it turned on yet sometimes it actually does overdraft (pre TBM) strange

I actually found out this happened to me today. Never happened before. I can’t understand how I made this mistake. Thank goodness I had enough in my on line sinking funds that I could cover it. The credit card company said once it clears I can call them. I will be doing that
by (3.2k points)
@granulite5008 oh I'm glad you do! My sinking is in an online savings not attached so I never wouldve got it covered in time. and at this point I just want it to bounce and fight the overdraft or NSF charges. What a headache! Good luck to you!

@faddish7 and good luck to you!

Oh feel bad for you. Sinking feeling for sure. Back in the day I sent on a 2. $ check for those cute address labels that come in the mail. The back cashes it for 200. Yikes which was a lot with a little one, nearly drained my account. It was returned within 10 days.
by (3.2k points)
@ish3 omg 10 days !

Well today's update. my account shows as a negative balance still but the transaction came up returned with NSF charge from PNC. The lady I spoke with refunded my NSF charge but she seemed odd to me. couldnt tell me when that accidental 8200$ credit card payment would fall off my account so it would be back positive. I had 2 other charges which have seemed to go through. Still showing negative. I cant wait until this updates and falls off
by (1.6k points)
@faddish7 glad to hear ots working its way off. Unfortunately you probably won't see that difference till next week since we are heading into the weekend unless it processes with tonight's/saturdays transactions.
by (3.2k points)
@stroh55 I'm kinda screwed with the weekend huh ugggg! ‍♀️‍♀️ I'm hoping now pnc doesnt continue to charge me the fee daily. fingers crossed it processes tonight but dont want to be too hopeful lol. Thank u!
by (1.6k points)
@faddish7 if they do just call and speak to someone. I'd like to think since it's known and noted in your account that someone will be able to correct any subsequent fees for the next few days. Im know it sucks tho waiting and not being able to have anything else come out till its all cleared. It will be ok.
by (3.2k points)
@stroh55  ty !
by (8.2k points)
@faddish7 make sure you talk to CC company to make sure they do not charge it twice
by (3.2k points)
@tybi I spoke to chase cc yesterday and she told me they never do that. I guess we'll see lol idk if I trust that answer!
by (8.2k points)
@faddish7 it’s so hard. I once had an accidentally mistake like that that caused an avalanche of overdrafts and the bank would not remove them to the tune of 150.

I transferred to a zero balance card, unfortunately I did not know that it took 3 weeks, and thought I didn’t do the transaction correctly so I did it again. Then both transactions hit. Even though I called right away and the 2nd balance transfer was returned within 24 hours, I still ate the 2nd transfer fee. Nothing they could do. So word of advice, if you open a discover acct for the zero interest, it takes 2-3 weeks, but once opened, i t only takes 24 hrs to process
