What are people’s thoughts on using cash during this virus outbreak? I spent $30 on gas and paid inside the gas station and then thought about how much money has gone through the cashier’s hand, not knowing where it’s all been. (YOU CAN KEEP THE CHANGE! )
What are people’s thoughts on using cash during this virus outbreak?

Cash was dirty before this and will be dirty after this. Use wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. I’d be more worried about the poop and cocaine residue on cash than Covid.

A lot of places where I am do not take cash
by (4.7k points)
@thumbscrew they try that where I live but they are legally not allowed to do it so if they are caught they will get a huge fine

I’m still using cash, everywhere here accepts it. How many people clean their hands or cards between use? Purses and wallets touch super gross surfaces, too.

@omni5722 I have seen people put there cards in there mouth then insert it in machine. ( We can not clean inside the machine) I also still people still licking there fingers to Get money out of there wallets (old man thing)

Was a cashier for 3 years, you'll be surprised what people do to their cash or keep it. even before covid. Its nasty. Just always wash your hands and don't touch your face!

Agree with above poster. cash has always been and will always be disgusting lol. I've always been a cashless budgeter/spender, but I don't avoid cash because it's dirty, and I certainly don't think it's more dangerous now. I just don't like to spend cash because it's easier to track when I spend everything on my CC and just pay it off every month.

I use CC for gas and record it in my cashless envelope.

It doesn't bother me one bit. I am not living life much differently. I just wash my hands a lot more.

I'm a librarian and recently attended a webinar put on by the CDC and IMLS about library materials (books). They are not concerned about paper as a point of transmission. Someone would have to sneeze directly on the paper, then you'd have to touch the still wet fluid and then touch your face. If you're really concerned, you can "quarantine" it for 24 hours, but that's really probably not necessary.

@bertle41 I heard there was transmission in South Korea at a temple and the paper transcripts tested positive for that virus
by (620 points)
I'm not familiar with that example. Also, having the virus on them is different from the virus then getting out of that medium in such an amount that its a risk of infection.

@bertle41 that’s funny, as an archivist all the seminars I’ve seen have said the exact opposite. We are quarantining any documents that are touched for at least 48 hours. If I’m thinking of the same webinar, new information has come out since then that has indicated otherwise and the individuals presenting presented information that wasn’t universally accepted.

We are also quarantining materials for 72 hours because so many of our items have a plastic coating, which is a better surface for transmission.

This is very helpful! Thank you!

Quite a few places around me dont accept cash. Or they do but with stipulations such as one till for cash, no change so you must pay the exact amount.

I’ve seen lots of places doing no cash at all. Always thought when something big happened people would empty their accounts for cash but turns out this one is kinda the opposite.
by (11.1k points)
@decollate63 it was both. At the beginning of the pandemic, banks and stores were having a hard time keeping cash on hand because everyone was trying to withdraw all of their money but people also turned to using debit/credit to avoid paying with cash

I’ve actually started using my debit card more. I don’t want to expose the retail clerk or myself. Money was already disgusting and now with this virus I just don’t want to take a chance

We keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol and paper towel in the car, just for things like this.

Honestly I still use cash for everything except gas for convenience. I have no plans to ever stop using cash

We’re also still using cash. It’s as dirty as the card machines imo and I’ve only seen one cashier wipe down that card machine in between customers during this whole thing and no one around us has stopped accepting cash or put any stipulations on it

A lot of places I have seen aren’t even accepting cash right now.
by (9.9k points)
@boniface66045 I think it depends where you live. Everywhere we go, cash is accepted. We have had no problems spending in cash.
by (1.5k points)
I agree. Although a lot of corporations I have notice are asking for no cash or limit cash use.

We always use cash for paying for gas. Some places, they charge less if you pay in cash vs. using a card other than the gas station's.

As for the gas, I have a separate pre-paid Amex card that I load money onto the card every pay period. It has its own app and very easy. As for the other envelopes, my husband and I do a combination of cash while doing “cashless “. We use credit cards to earn travel rewards. I use Mimi’s expense trackers to keep track of my purchases on the credit card and then take the money out of the envelopes, deposit it into the bank to pay the card off. It is extra work and something I only do because my husband won’t have patience for the multiple steps but this has earned us so many free airline tickets plus we are very cautious and still track every dollar so we never go over our budget

If you’ve ever been a cashier, you’ll know what people do with their money. I’ve had people hand me money by pulling it out of indecent places.

Cash, the gas pumps are just as nasty as the last person to use them. and so isn't the card reader and pin pad. ‍♀️
