Loaf number 1!  We love a good crusty bread.Loaf number 1! We love a good crusty bread. But they’re expensive. Like $5. 75 a loaf. So I made my own tonight (for less than $0. 50) What do you make to save money?

Love making bread in our Dutch oven. My favorite is to make one hour focaccia bread in our cast iron skillet.

I made sourdough bread for first time and it was so dense. I had to toss it.
by (2.1k points)
@chimera ugh! I hate kitchen flops. That should almost be an other tread lol things we’ve tried to do to save money but it didn’t work. I’m sure there are some funny stories out there

I love baking sourdough! Helps my budget and my gluten sensitive belly when I just want to eat an entire loaf of bread
by (2.4k points)
Wow @amedeo9958 @thorp1455ertson - gorgeous loaf of bread. We bake all our own as well - but have yet to get a good sourdough bread made! Do you use a starter? Any tips you can share would be most welcome! Thanks! :)
by (2.1k points)
@amedeo9958 @thorp1455ertson ooooo that’s a pretty loaf! I’ve been thinking of getting in to making sourdough bread. My belly isn’t a fan of gluten either (but it is of fresh bread! ). Can you share your recipe please?
by (660 points)
Thanks guys! Yes, this is from a homemade starter, I think it's about 5 months old now? I usually use the recipe by king Arthur flour on their website! Although this one was a loaf of no recipe and pure instinct
by (2.1k points)
@amedeo9958 @thorp1455ertson the best way to cook when you’re familiar. By instinct.

I made my own granola last night. I usually spend money on pre-made granola, but made my own from things I already had in the pantry and it was delicious! Saves on packaging as well and I love to reduce waste as much as possible.
by (2.1k points)
@pokpoke Stiebel it’s so much yummier! I make my own too. Fun that you can tweak it to your liking too.

I roasted a turkey breast over the weekend instead of buying lunch meat, which is a staple in our home. $2. 40/lb instead of $7. 99/lb at the grocery store!
by (2.1k points)
@regenerative8 it’s so much yummier too! We do this most weeks haha otherwise husband gets leftovers for lunches (I’m on mat leave).

To those making yogurt—I had great luck with FairLife milk, but will no longer use. Which brand, kind, etc have you had luck with? In case it matters, I use insta pot to make my yogurt.
by (2.1k points)
@solidarity I’ve tried regular milk and haven’t had any issues with it.
by (22.3k points)
I use dehydrator, whole milk and Greek yogurt for starter

I stopped buying spaghetti sauce and make my own with tomatoes from garden each summer. Tastes much better and I can make salt-free and sugar-free!
by (2.1k points)
@rhapsodize sugar free is so good! It surprises me that there’s sugar in pasta sauce. You must have a gorgeous garden with lots of tomatoes!
by (13.2k points)
@observatory573 idk about gorgeous, it was my first year and got lucky with tomatoes, zucchini, squash & bells for the freezer. guess I was listening to my granny after all. lol
by (9.8k points)
@rhapsodize can I get your recipe? I tried one last time and it was a disaster and waste of quite a few tomatoes
by (13.2k points)
@rimester yes. it is so simple and use in slow cooker. I just eliminate the salt & sugar. its about 6 tomatoes so I double recipe. To get the skins off tomatoes, put in boiling water for about 2 minutes and the peel right off.

@rhapsodize granny wisdom sometimes runs though our blood lol it’s great when we end up with a bumper crop

I also made laundry detergent last fall. Started using in November and have only used about 2" of jar. Supposed to last a year but I'm pretty sure I'll get longer. goodbye Tide!
by (500 points)
@rhapsodize me too! I’ve been making my own for a few years. Lasts so long and nice not to have to buy it anymore.
by (13.2k points)
@tarnish I got the recipe on Pinterest. I made the powder. spent about $28for years worth but I know it will last longer.

My hubby makes his own bread now. Noticed that Selection brand flour is better than the name brands. I agree. Savings there.

I make bricks. I've probably made enough to build a storage shed for our garden tools. My recipe. ANY bread recipe. no matter how hard I try, I end up with BRICKS, not edible bread. I am SO envious of your beautiful loaf! (My only reprieve is that I just found out I have Thankspe 2 Diabetes, so I am pretty much OFF bread. Since I can't eat it anyway, and hubby is happy with store-bought bread, I have forced myself off the "you've gotta become a great bread baker" trail! )
by (2.1k points)
@iq Hendricks I’m sure you make other delicious things. Bread can be finicky

I have to eat Gluten free so I bake my own cakes. The local baker charges $4. 99/slice for Rum Cake. The cost of this cake was less then $10 including the Rum
by (2.1k points)
@hamrnand20 i usually eat gluten free but with the birth of my 2nd son I’ve found that I can eat some. I bake my own gf stuff too! Problem is I usually eat it all lol
by (8.8k points)
@observatory573 I totally understand! I try not to bake too often because I have no control.
by (2.1k points)
@hamrnand20 we’re in good company haha no control
by (8.8k points)
@observatory573 have you ever made a GF bread?
by (2.1k points)
@hamrnand20 nope. I’ve stayed away from that. It’s hard enough to buy good gf bread! Have you?
by (8.8k points)
@observatory573 I have not. I haven’t made regular bread  I did find Schar bread to be one of the best GF breads I have bought.
by (2.1k points)
@hamrnand20 interesting. I’m in Canada. I haven’t heard of that brand
by (8.8k points)
@observatory573 here Walmart sells it, they might in CA?
by (2.1k points)
