I have a puppy, who has taken to peeing on the carpet on my upstairs landing. In this warn weather, the smell is really starting to bug me. I've tried all sorts. Any suggestions for getting rid of the smell and also stopping him from peeing there? Charley Powell

I work in a vets. You need to pat up but not rub what's there. Sprinkle with bicarb to soak rest and hoover up. Then use biological washing powder (not non-bio! ) 10% solution with warm water, scrub, dab up, leave to dry and then sprinkle bicarb again, leave for a few hours and hoover up. If it's the same spot each time he can probably smell it from last time, if it's different spots it's more difficult to stop him

Don't use bleach as it smells like urine to them and will mark they're territory by peeing again

Cover in biological washing powder and lightly spray with white vinegar and leave over night if possible. Hoover and repeat if necessary. The washing powder breaks down and neautralises the enzymes in the wee. The shops own ones work absolutely fine it doesn't need to be branded :-)

This, also if possible lift the carpet and clean the floorboards and underlay with bio washing detergent, let dry thoroughly before putting the carpet back.

Put a safety gate up so he can’t get up the stairs and try this esp for pets , it kills the bacteria that cause the smell  xx

To move his 'pee spot' you need to soak it up with kitchen roll and place the kitchen roll where tou want him to pee. He will smell where he went and repeat it. When he needs to go place him in the new area where he can smell the kitchen roll and he will learn that is the new place to go. reward new pee spot and try not to punish old pee spot. The encouragement works better than the scoulding. Good luck x

@sosa6 I used to do this with a puppy pad when my dog was little. Soak it up in the puppy pad then put the pad where you want him to go as suggested above.

There is specific cleaners for taking the smell of urine away but if its hapening alot then chances are that its soaked through to the floor boards which means lifting carpet and bleaching floorboards also sprinkle pepper in the places that the pup is peeing and let them sniff it and sternly tell them bad!

It's a nightmare my dogs weed all over my sons carpet during the night a few times when he's left his door open and the smell is unreal. I've tried everything now I think it's probably in the underlay so whole lot will need replacing. Ripped up my friends carpet few months back as she had an elderly dog who keep weeing and even though she'd cleaned it up the underlay STANK and I mean stank to the point I felt physically sick

Urine neutraliser. You can buy in 1 litre ready to use or 5 litre concentrated bottles to dilute yourself - this is what they use in care homes. If its soaked through the underlay into the boards then even this might not be enough. You can spray on, or use concentrate in a carpet cleaner such as a rug doctor, or better still get a decent Vax.

Hi the best thing to use is biological washing powders. I have a liquid that I mix with water. The important thing is to break down the enzymes so the dog doesn’t return. Some products just mask the smell. Google it. Most rescues recommend it. And it’s cheap and easily accessible.

Herbal K9 solutions. Odour Fresh - Pear Drop scent, fabulous product, indoor use, dog beds, patios etc. (I've used for years. It works)  Regarding puppy peeing, as soon as he has a drink, eats or plays. Take him in the garden and give command. Wee wee, get busy or whatever you choose. Your pup will soon get the hang of where he needs to go. It's a case of watching him like a hawk. (keep him away from that area as much as possible). The signs of needing loo are sniffing and circling.

There are enzyme sprays that will completely clear this up, even soaked in ancient wees. You wet the area with the spray and the enzymes digest the wee, with nothing left. Even your puppy won't be able to smell it. The only catch is the cost of them. The one I use is AUD $28 for a spray bottle.
