Did anyone else flood last night? We got water in our basement and crawl space. I hope most people stayed dry!

They reported 4" of rain at O'Hare, so unfortunately that's probably the case for some people.

Yep, our yard usually floods up to our patio, but this time it flooded all the way across the patio and yard. We have a dirt crawl though, so no inside flooding.

Our yard is now a lake. More than a foot deep. I’m so depressed.

@agitprop91 ours too  We’re pumping it out
by (13.9k points)
@rafi us too. We are going to call and have someone come out and look at it again. They do yard sump pumps.
by (790 points)
@agitprop91 definitely interested in that - keep us posted on what you find out
by (13.9k points)
@rafi can let you know when they are coming if you want to be a part of the conversation.
by (790 points)
@agitprop91 yes, please do!
by (2k points)
@agitprop91 @rafi we have a couple small pumps and use them in the backyard whenever it rains because our backyard fills up as well. Yesterday was just too much rain but generally they help us stay dry. I hope you find something that helps!

Is Des Plaines known for flooding? I’ve been told to keep that in mind when we signed on our house (moving next month). Why is that tho? Why flooding in DP more than other suburbs?
by (5.9k points)
@marshamarshal parts are in a flood plain. If not in the flood plain then it’d just bad luck when we get 4 inches. my backyard too is a lake under our swing set and next to our house.
by (4.8k points)
@marshamarshal some houses are in the "flood zone" because they are close to the river. But really any house with a basement has a chance at flooding at some point. We had issues with ours recently due to some repairs that needed done to the chimney. Who would have thought that would cause basement issues? ‍♀️
by (4.5k points)
@marshamarshal it’s not just Des plaines. It’s any city along the river. Up in the fox valley area they got it way worse than us last spring (or maybe the one before). The flooding has been much better over the past couple of years because the city did something (very technical term) that decreased the flooding.

@marshamarshal and we lived in DP in the flood plain and never had any water or seepage in our basement - so just check disclosure s re water!

@marshamarshal it was just a bad storm last night. It can flood mostly off River Road if there are tons of bad storms but that tends to happen once every 15 years. The town has built in a prevention method on River Road, however it didn’t work so well when severe rain storms hi for full week or two in the past. It’s not all of Des Plaines mostly the homes super close to River Road.

Does anybody have a flood zone map or something by any chance?

So sorry! We are dry. I’m reading from Mt. Prospect friends though that they got flooded and they have ponds in their backyard.

We are not in a flood zone but our yard floods a few times a year with heavy rains. We have a high water table and we are also the lowest spot in our block.
by (2k points)
@agitprop91 same for us. We’ve been digging and installing drain pipes for years.

We live in a 1930s home. The best thing when we did when we moved in was to put internal drain tiles in and a sump pump. We really like Northern IL waterproofing co. in A. H.

Our basement flooded. Luckily we had party tables set up from past parties & and had all of our stuff up on tables other wise we would have had to throw away a lot of stuff more stuff than we did. We also were lucky to catch it before it got worse. My husband was out at 2 o’clock in the morning removing the drain cover and unclogging our drain so the water could go down. We’re still trying to dry the basement

Ours was sewer backup which is the most disgusting thing. I hope those of you who got water it was just rain water!
