There are several apps that can help you out with that (I’ll post a tool review article soon), so you don’t need to develop your own solution (although it’s possible if your shop is custom made).  A) Set up the opt-in(s) to your Messenger list The Opt-in is mandatory and a good rule by Facebook to protect users from more aggressive marketers and spammers.  If you don’t have any cart recovery in place as of now, you can go straight with the Chatbot tool’s solution. Pop-ups work well when the first item is placed in the cart. You want to give them a reason why they should approve the Messenger Opt-in. This can be as simple as providing tracking information or giving a 10% discount code. If you already have one in place make sure that the two are not blocking or sabotaging each other (for example different popups). If there are no inconsistent messages or popups on top of each other, you’re usually good to go. You can have a cart abandonment sequence for both email and Messenger, so don’t worry.  B) Set up the cart recovery messages  Schedule 1-2 messages within the first 24 hours after the user left the cart. The 24 hours matters as FB has a protection rule to avoid unwanted messages on their precious asset. I saw some shops sending 3 messages, but I think that’s overkill on Messenger.  It can be a simple reminder, either with or without extra discount code. You can dynamically show the product images and remind the user to finish his/her order. Make sure to use a voice that is in alignment with your brand. You want to stay congruent with all of your communication. Once you set these live, you can expect a 5-20% recapture, so out of 100 abandoned carts, on average 5-20 will finish the purchase.  Free Remarketing on Messenger Now it’s a very interesting topic, as Facebook itself is still figuring out what the best long term solution is in this regard.  Recently, they’ve introduced One Time Notification. It allows the user to request a notification for a future message outside of the 24 hours window. The cleanest use case is product availability. If a product is not available, the user can opt-in to receive a notification. But it can be used for sending other types of promotions. You can have user’s opt-in for new products, discount codes and many other things.  What to do?  1) Get permission by Facebook for your page.  This is very straightforward. You need to go to your page’s settings. Then go to Advanced Messaging and scroll down to the Requested Features. Click on request next to the One-Time notification and just confirm the beta feature texts provided by Facebook. Confirmation is instant.  2) Have users opt-in for notification and save them as segment  Let’s say they sign up for a discount for next month. You will have a message offering them to be notified. Once they click on the button, you save them to the segment that you have for wanting to be notified for next month’s discount.  3) Send out the notification with the ‘One-time’ tag Whether it’s a new item or a product back in the store. Now you can just send this message to that exact segment that signed up for it. This can be scheduled in advance and doesn’t need any special attention.  This is absolutely permission marketing and is limited to one use case. If you want, you can ask the users for multiple notifications individually. Just make sure you have the segmentation right when sending out multiple notifications.  Please note as this is a brand new feature, many chatbot builders don’t have this enabled yet. Until then (or latest March 4th) you can still use the subscription messages that enable you to send unlimited messages but they cannot be promotional.   Sponsored Messages, the hidden unicorn ad campaign This is a somewhat hidden powerhouse of the FB ads empire. Why? Because you can’t just send messages (ads) to any Facebook user. It’s only for those who have messaged your page within the last year.  So why bother?  It’s very cheap and you can expect results between 15-40x ROAS. Also, once the users respond to your message, you have the ability to message them again for 24 hours for free + have them opt-in for a new one-time notification.  I have an extra post in the group where I go in more details regarding the usage and setup (lmk I can tag you) but let me quickly summarize what to do:  1) You need people to sign up to your Messenger list. If you follow the first step of this post and have sufficient traffic, that could be already a good list to start with. You would need at least 1k people before thinking about anything really. 2) Set up a new campaign dedicated to Sponsored messages. 3) Create your message (ad) that will directly arrive in the Facebook Inbox of the targeted users. 4) (optional) create extra follow-up messages within the 24hour rule and have the user opt-in for a new one-time notification. If you implement these 3 points, you’ll be able to utilize your ads and traffic better, so you don’t need to worry that much regarding the ad prices. Hope that helps  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I used recart in the past, it was pretty useless unless they were able to fix the fact when people push it, it opens up another window for the browser to log in. I emailed them about it and they said it was an issue with Facebook not cooperating and they were collabing on a solution-- is it the same with this app?

I prefer to take emails or phone numbers when people are not logged in. You can detect that in the browser. So go with messenger when logged in, email or sms when not

Yes same, I would much rather collect emails and get people onto a list.

Then do it that way mate. Is that your shop or client?

My own one. Yep, I just have a discount popup and a special offer and then get people onto the list. About to build out an auto responder sequence for it

Awesome. I really like the combination of Messenger and email based on login. The less friction the better
