RDAs allow your ads to serve on more sites/placements and also access Google properties including Gmail/YouTube. However you have less control over how your assets are presented. Static banner ads guarantee brand safety, but to ensure maximum reach a lot of resizing needs to be done.

I wouldn't say guarantee brand safety - so much fraud and poor inventory across GDN the ad format doesn't stop that. But from a compliance perspective banners are better. Suppose you can do more with banners if you do HTML5 for example. I always use mixture of the two if using GDN.

Responsive are going to be the standard going forward with Google, although you have more control with static, you’ll start to see them be shown less and less

Non-responsives are a pain in the ass because it's difficult to make changes - but they can be very powerful when animated.

What do you use to animate them?

Yeah thanks all. I’ve found conversions easier to come by with RDA.

Since human hours are more expensive than machines hours, I prefer responsive ads. And when built with relevant content, the produce good results.
