Running a Youtube Trueview Display campaign. Only targeting was via Channel Placements, but all the Impressions are appearing as seen on "Youtube. com". I assume these are search placements, but if so is it applying any kind of audience targetting? If it isn't, can I exclude that "Youtube. com" targeting to ensure Display Ads are only eligible to appear on the Channel Placements? Simply trying to add "Youtube. com" to exclusions didn't work (which makes a kind of sense).

You are referring to discovery ads right, the ones that appear above YouTube search results and on the sidebar as similar videos, excluding YouTube, in this case, may not be allowed and if so it won't get any impression because they are only eligible to run on YouTube.

Which makes a kind of sense. So would it be accurate to say that Discovery Ads are not effective with Placement targeting, but need further audience or keyword parameters to not appear to literally anyone on Youtube search results? This is opposed to video ads, where Placements are a simple means of directly targeting Channel viewers.

Using audience targeting alongside keywords and topics, etc will restrict your reach to your selected targeting (Inclusive) meaning all your targeting methods will intersect, what I do is simply making a separate targeting method for each ad group. adgroup #1 audience, #2 keywords, #3 topics

Ok thanks. That makes sense. Where if at all, does placements come into play? Thankspically too specific?

Yes too specific that will make it only show as ad in similar videos on that video placement
