Curious.  Do you buy beef/poultry directly from local farmers?Curious. Do you buy beef/poultry directly from local farmers? Who is your go to? Do you have an extra freezer to accommodate? Do you go in on it with other families to offset cost? Exploring this avenue for my family and would love input. Thank you!

@transfuse you just read my mind. I was going to ask if you had lamb. Is the lamb raised on your farm or elsewhere?
by (660 points)
@leggett from our farm. Just took lambs in this morning

My parents raise beef in OH so I get a quarter steer from them every year and we go in on a hog. Generally if you buy direct from the farmer you will have to buy at least a quarter so you would need a deep freezer. It's a couple hundred pounds of beef. If you think that's too much I know there are people that go in together.

@transcaucasia676 We only have the freezer attached to our fridge. LOL. Where does one even buy a deep freezer?

@injury68259 we got a smaller stand up one (bc it's easier to get stuff out and organize) at Lowes. Any of those kind of big box stores have them.

Also you would want to get one with an alarm on the chance it loses power or the door gets left open because God forbid you didnt know and lost all that meat!

We order from seven sons farm, they deliver local about every 6 weeks. You can order meat by the lb, we buy enough for the 6 weeks and use our other freezer in the garage to accommodate. I have been using them for 8 years, their quality and service is exceptional.

@el83 Can you give me a ballpark idea of prices? I don’t want to sign up on their site just to see unless I decide to go with them

@injury68259 is there anything in particular? Here are some:

Walnut Acres delivers to Naperville once a month. You may select your cuts each time or just choose the standard package.

I have a chest freezer in the garage. We buy from Hufendick Farms. Highly recommend! They have angus cows and Berkshire pigs. Plus you can shop at their store in downtown Plainfield to try before you commit to a whole pig or part of a cow! Hufendick Farm Market. And did I mention they’re the nicest people ever? I’m so happy I bumped into @transfuse when I was picking up bacon earlier this week.

Yes and yes. Deep freezer in the basement, not only for meat but for any picked seasonal fruit, butters, pesto etc, super convenient as we rarely buy meat in the store. Broad Branch farm has a great meat, fresh produce and eggs

We don’t anymore. It just gave us so many cuts we don’t normally use.

I have a deep freezer in my garage. I buy from Seven Sons (they are 100% grass fed which is important for my family's allergies). They offer delivery. For my family of 5 a 1/4 cow lasts about 8-9 months, I also usually purchase extra ground beef because we use that the most.

We order from Seven Sons as well. Eggs, beef, chicken, and pork. Chest freezer in garage as I buy bulk packages to keep costs lower.

I just bought 1/4 cow from a farm in Wisconsin. They do local deliveries in our area. He is doing one t the end of April. This amount of beef fit in my 3 freezers (I have 3 fridges in my house). The meat is terrific and it’s like buying Whole Foods quality for jewel prices. Message me if you want his information

Do any of them have reasonable prices for small amounts. This is just my son and I? And we don’t have any extra freezer space?
by (660 points)
@huron47138 Hufendick Farm Market offers meat bundles, as well as individual pieces. We can even custom cut meat for you
