Read “Square Foot Gardening” by Mel Bartholomew. We were novices last year and that book helped us grow a beautiful garden!

Tomatoes are easy. Snacking cucumbers. Jalapeños. Basil, Oregano, Parsley. These will practically grow themselves. Only grow stuff you think you’ll actually eat. My kids devour cherry tomatoes so that’s all I’m growing in terms of tomatoes.

I have a handyman that could easily build raised beds! If anyone needs his number.

Look up square foot gardening. It will tell you what you can grow and how many per sq ft. It’s the best way to maximize your space. I think Gardeners. com has some example gardens. Don’t plant vining plants too close to anything else or they will take over. Use a cage to support tomato plants and a trellis for cucumbers. I started with a 4x8 bed my first year and grew probably 10 different things. Now we have 3 more beds and already want more

My husband and his friend made a 12x12 bed. We don’t grow anything crazy anymore. We have in the past done strawberries, watermelon, cucumbers, broccoli, lettuce. even a peanut plant (that was a big bust though! ) but they took over the garden, broccoli and lettuce didn’t. Broccoli would have the little worms in them and it grossed me out so I stopped that. They also only produce one broccoli head a season so it wasn’t worth the space we had. We only do plum tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, jalapeños, another type of spicy pepper, sweet peppers, sugar snap peas (they climb up the lattice) and a few other things. My husband then makes his salsa with most of it. Our kids love going out back and helping pick and of course eat!

My husband built my raised bed garden. Pretty easy to do in an afternoon. Tomatoes, green beans, jalapenos, are easy to do from starter plants. I do lettuce from seed and it does well and grows back every year.
