Hi Moms :) I wasn't sure where else to post. but my daughter (27) has been waking up with jaw pain and it's "locked" a little and hurts until it "clicks". She has been researching and sees that people recommend botox (jaw) injections. Her findings show that people get this done tho, by a cosmetologist. I told her that insurance will surely not pay in that situation and she should get a consultation with an oral surgeon instead - and she did make an appt. Has anyone else had this and had botox work for them? Thank you in advance!

Under no circumstances should a cosmetologist EVER inject botox! That is extremely illegal and cosmetologists do NOT have the licensing to purchase it. Botox should only be done by an rn/doctor in a medical spa office or medical office of another kind. Please do not send her to a cosmetologist lol

@tote633 I was gonna say. you can’t even HAVE needles in a place where cosmetologists work. They must not trust us (At least that was the law last I checked)

I think the way she put it was "cosmetology dermatologist"? I wouldn't let her go to someone who is unlicensed that's for sure :)

I would suggest reaching out to a physical therapist or an oromyofacial specialist.

I would also recommend a chiropractor. My chiro is seeing patients with emergencies. She is great. Dr. @greenheart is in south Naperville. Reach out she can help.

Suburban TMJ and Sleep Center treats only cases like your daughter . Botox can help relax the muscles associated with jaw pain but That’s only a temporary measure !

It may be TMJ. I recently had it really bad. I woke up in the am and had the worse pain on the right side of my jaw and it hurt when I chewed anything. It started causing me ear pain as well. The cause may be grinding or clenching her teeth when she sleeps. I called my dentist and they recommended a night guard for me. If it’s still bothering her, have her call her dentist.

She may need a night guard if she is clenching her teeth during the night. Try to find the cause.

She's probably grinding/clenching her teeth while she's sleeping. Look at stress levels. She may need a sleep aid to take the edge off at night.

I had this issue during my late 20s. Saw a physical therapist who specializes in TMJ. My dentist had a bite night guard made for me that I wore when I slept as I was clenching my jaw during sleep. It was all triggered by stress. Once I saw the PT, I was able to manage the muscle tension, do the exercises & eventually stop wearing the night guard. All was able to be done without any injections.

She may be misusing the term cosmetologist- cosmetology is for hair, skin, nails, etc. - try calling the dentist first and let them direct you to the proper person- it could be as simple as wearing a mouth guard to wear at night (I’m not a doctor, just a cosmetologist who had this in high school)

I also agree with those who said to get a night guard and look into stress. I had terrible TMJ in college and my dentist fit me with a night guard that helped a ton. My TMJ is mostly resolved now despite not wearing the night guard and still having stress.

I have had this problem since i was a teenager. Have her go to a pharmacy and get a night guard right away. Then she needs to go to a specialist and see whats causing it. Has she had her wisdom teeth out? She is prolly clinching and grinding her teeth while sleeping so thats whats causing it to lock.

I got it also when I was chewing gum all day. I would pick up a night guard at a pharmacy. I ended up having to get one from my dentest but the pharmacy is a good place to start

Ive had jaw issues for over 20 years. Got a mouth guard to wear at night, I no longer sleep on my stomach (it shifted my jaw oddly), and when my jaw hurt really bad, chew gum it pops it back into place but hurts like hell. Mine also hurt when eating crunchy hard breads/bagels.

Hi  I had TMJ, and I went the mouth guard route. I wasted a lot of money. It made mine worse and I would wake up extremely stiff. However, I quit chewing gum and my problem has literally disappeared. This is my personal experience only. If it persisted I was going to go the botox route.

Something to consider might be an overall evaluation from a full service dentist like @richardson/activity" class="qa-user-link">richardson of Gantos Dental Group. @richardson/activity" class="qa-user-link">richardson is extremely knowledgeable in all areas related to dental care. Her practice is technologically comprehensive and advanced. And, she is well networked with other medical professionals to which she could refer your daughter if that becomes advisable.

Hi @priggery1, I am sorry to hear your daughter is dealing with this. It is so painful! I see great results with the cranial adjustment I do. I have seen countless women her age for the same issue and I believe only one didn’t resolve after just a few visits. I am happy to talk further by PM or you can email my office manager at hello@advancedhealthnaperville. com. Our office number is 6303558988. I had this at her age, I clenched my jaw and night and couldn’t open it without pushing on it to make it click in the morning. Before you do anything major, try a mouth guard while she sleeps! Game changer for me! My jaw still occasionally “locks” but I sleep better and have no daily issues!

Sounds like TMJ. Maybe consult with your dentist first and get a referral if needed? They may recommend a night guard and some can get your fitted for those.

My daughter had the same thing. We had an mri done and it showed that she is missing cartilage. We tried Botox and it didn’t do anything for her. Tried a professional mouth guard it helped somewhat. Then for Christmas she received a weighted blanket and lo and behold it’s helped a ton! I don’t know why but it’s the only thing that has helped.

She should see a TMJ specialist sooner rather than later! I’m undergoing treatment right now for clenching and grinding that, to quote my doctor, had to be “15 years in the making” and caused a lot of damage to my joints and years of pain and headaches. I now have to wear a hard plastic splint that sticks above my bottom teeth about an inch 24/7 for a year! It’s not fun! I do have a great tmj specialist located in Shorewood I can recommend if interested and can also help navigate insurance as far as what questions to ask! Dealing with insurance was a 6 month nightmare! I ignored this for too long and accepted the pain and now the treatment needed is far greater than if I addressed it a long time ago! Just want to help someone else if I can! Feel free to pm me if you’d like to connect and ask questions!

My oral surgeon made me promise him that I would never let anyone talk me into surgery for that. I had the same problem. And I’ve never gotten surgery. I guess what I’m saying is I look into alternative treatments? Definitely a mouth guard if you don’t have one of those already.
by (1k points)
@cosette6 I did all my that. I did all I could. I had the surgery and never looked back. And never bothered me again.

TMJ for sure - talk to a dentist or PT who specializes in it. Would not recommend injections right away - conservative measures first. Massage therapists also can help relieve pain but would be best to see someone who can offer other modalities as well.

Ooh, she is grinding and clenching  I have the same problem. I had a fitted mouthpiece to wear at night for years. I need a new one Since we have been sheltering, I have gotten worse. So much so, my muscles behind my jaw is so sore. I have the pop on one side. My mother dealt with TMJ for years after having a bad adjustment, so I have avoided that route. Good luck!

Soft foods, no chewing gum. And to start conservatively a OS would prescribe a low dose muscle relaxer at night for clenching.

I have TMJ issues due to teeth clenching. The mouth guard is a huge help. When I have flair ups like your daughter has, I use these massage techniques in the video. My dentist also suggested Advil and an ice pack 20 minutes twice a day on the side of your jaw where it hurts. Honestly don’t think Botox is needed but everyone is different.
