Question I am seriously considering hiring a nanny starting ASAP but I am torn, do you think it’s safe now? I need help, my husband and I are still working M-F 8-5pm and it’s hard doing that and giving my 3 year old daughter the attention she needs. Thoughts ? Do I wait until June?

Same boat! But I think almost every family is also in this boat. I sometimes wish I was that stay at home mom where I didn’t need to balance a full time job, Cooking, cleaning, e-learning and preschool with my 7 and 4 year old. However I personally would not fee comfortable bringing someone in right now.

@cystolith yes! We are doing schoolwork at night because my kids need so much help

@el83 we have decided that is the best time for us as well. We started having her do homework at 9am but it was too hard.

I feel as long as you’re taking precautions and you know your nanny is taking precautions I think it’s OK also if you’re looking for a nanny my daughter is looking for a nanny position.

Just wanted to know, with the stay in place shelter order, is it allowed? It’s a genuine question I have. I am in the same boat with a 4yr and 11 months old. I’d love to get some help.

@sanches it is, I read up on it. I am also an essential worker, I work with the law enforcement.

Can non essential workers get help too?
by (1.7k points)
I think so. But I’m not sure

@juna78 thank you. Do you know where I can check?
by (1.9k points)
@sanches you do what you need. The government cannot forbid you to have someone watch your children while you work.

If it’s been someone else who has been in quarantine for 2 months, then I don’t see much of a threat. The kids of essential workers are in daycare. A full time nanny in your house only is a lot less risky than daycare.

Nanny here! I work 8-5 mon-friday. Where it can be super scary. I would recommend a phone interview then maybe Skype. Make sure they are serious about social distancing that way they are not bringing it into your home. I work with an agent who is fantastic. She pre screens nanny’s does you wont have to interview a lot of them. And helps you develop a contract. I can get you her info I’ll be right back.

My Premier Nanny She is always there for both the parents and the nanny’s with any questions. From a nanny side she really helped me understand everything with COVID and being a nanny through this. So just a thought for you to help make sure you are getting the right fit without adding COVID stress into your life.

We’re in the same boat as well. Any nannies on the black market?! LOL They should start a secret group “Prohibition Nannies”

Don’t make fear based decisions. I think you should take steps to reduce over all stress ! Yes on the nanny ❤️

yes. Take all precautions, but you are not required to lose your jobs because of a broad order. Daycares are open and companies that check in on seniors. Childcare is deemed essential so do whatever you need to get through these crazy times. I’m blessed to be home full time and truly feel for those that have the responsibilities of a career and being a full time parent at the same time right now.

@cavetto Daycare’s are only open if granted an emergency license and allowed enrollment numbers are drastically reduced. (Max capacity of 10 per classroom) Unfortunately, in order to use the daycares that are still legally operating both parents must be essential and unable to work outside the home. These restrictions are making things very difficult for providers like myself and families that are working from home. I totally agree with you that she should seek a nanny if she is comfortable going that route, daycares will not be permitted to reopen to full capacity with no restrictions until at least phase 2 of the reopening plans so a nanny totally might be her best option. While I understand the need for restrictions I hate how it is negatively impacting families.

@lagena I’m so sorry that you’re in this position. I hate seeing all of the small business owners losing everything they’ve worked their whole life for. My heart truly breaks for all of you

@cavetto thank you! I am a true believer that all things will work out as they should and you get back what you put out so I am hopeful that while it may be tough now, we will bounce back stronger than before.

I don’t know honestly. I would have strict regulations such as sanitizing hands as she enters and checking temp. it’s real hard because u can carry the virus without having symptoms

I hired my cousin whose off school and my regular sitter anyways to come a few days a week for a few hours. I figure I know her and know she’s been being careful. And it’s made a HUGE difference. Maybe there’s someone you know and would be more comfortable?

75th St. Knowledge Beginnings is open for essential workers. My 3 yr old is home right now but that's where we go (and we miss it! )

I am a nanny, and I'm currently working and fully social distancing when not at work (as is the family I work for). I know a few nannies that have actually quit recently because the families they worked for are not social distancing/isolating, so I think this concern goes both ways! Just be clear that you're only interested in hiring someone following the same guidelines as your own family

My nanny has been coming the whole time. My husband and I are both working from home. She and her family are as careful as we are, to limit exposure. We are all in the “same circle” as they say. Having had several nannies until we found our beloved nanny now. I can share a few lessons on finding a nanny. 1. Trust your gut. Even if interview and resume are perfect but something doesn’t feel right. Trust it. 2. List out their responsibilities. And discuss during interviews. Good communication is key. You are their manager. Treat them and the duties that way. 3. Check their social media accounts. I know some people won’t like this suggestion. But you are inviting them into your home and be with your children. Do they seem to make good decisions on their posts. Are there pictures of them recently practicing, or not, social distancing. If someone shows you their true colors, believe them. 4. this one isn’t doable really in current environment - see how your kids interact with them on a final candidate interviews. And trust your kids instincts too. 5. Be careful with care dot com. Caregivers, who get bad reviews, can close that profile and create a new one. Get some solid references. And call them! Moms tend to be honest with other moms.

If you are super worried maybe consider a live-in nanny that way exposure is lowered tremendously.

We had my sil come in 3 days a week to help with e learning with my 6 and 8 yr old and it's made a world of difference on our quality of life. Do it? Just make sure you know what kind of social distancing they are keeping outside of being in your house and just set up some safety/health rules.

We are in the same boat. My husband and I are both working from home but it is becoming extremely difficult to both perform the duties of our full time jobs and care for 2 kids under 3. We just moved here a month ago in the middle of all this craziness so we don’t have anyone we trust. I have been balancing the risks of having a complete stranger come into our house not knowing what they are doing on off hours. If anyone has any suggestions or leads on extremely responsible available babysitters/nannies that would be greatly appreciated!

If you hire someone who is also wearing a mask and is cleanly and quarantines at home I’d say it’s fine. It’s what we are doing.
