Update: Called Naperville Nonemergency Police Number and they clarified that there are boundaries in which they should not be physically in our yard without advance warning or explanation. Thanks for all the support and a few belly laughs ladies ❤️ Hey! We recently moved into a neighborhood with an HOA. Looking for some help navigating their rights vs ours. Example: how often can they randomly walk through my backyard? How much of a critique can they be? Storing covered bbqs outside, etc?

Whaaaaaaat? I would be beyond upset if they thought they could walk in my yard. Just cause you are the head of an HOA doesnt mean i want you around my children.

@iso525 I’m just glad I was out there and didn’t panic that my kids were outside with two men in masks

@built call the cops!

@built i dont mean for this to freak you out. but i would also check the sexual predator registration maps to make sure that no HOA people have a history. And if it IS in your bylaws- ask Naperville or the poilice if that is legal for them to arrive unannounced and trespass.

@iso525 there is an easement between yards and behind them. They can walk in that easement. If you’re violating the rules they will notify you, then again and the fines and interest will begin.

You’ll have to look at your covenants. Different HOA’s have different rules and regulations, and, when you bought, you signed on for all of them. Covenants should’ve been provided to you when you purchased your home, and they’ll outline any restrictions on what is/isn’t permitted. They’ll also explain the procedure should you decide to improve your property (build a deck, fence, etc). I can tell you that our HOA board members don’t wander through our yards.  If they notice something when they’re out in the neighborhood or if another neighbor complains, a resident might get a letter. Maybe other HOA boards are a little sleuthier with more time on their hands?

You should’ve received a copy of all the HOA docs prior to closing. The rules would be listed in those. Reaching out to the management company could also help, they should be able to answer specific questions.

Both answers above are accurate, and they shouldn’t be randomly walking through your yard. If they noticed something or receive a complaint, they can get in touch with you.

I will say that I’m glad it ended in a polite conversation about anything they noticed, but it gives me anxiety and makes me wonder what the boundaries are.

@built and u were sure they were neighbors?
by (1.8k points)
@iso525 They were the Board Members, I talked with them

There would be nothing polite about my conversation if they were in my yard.

@vigor55126 ditto.

Well. Maybe a little polite: "Hello, sirs. Pleasant day to die, isn't it? "
