Ladies, question for those that have gotten their front door painted.  I chose SW Tricorn Black for my front door and my husband went to go get it but they said they didn't have semi-gloss - which is weird to me that they wouldn't  but anyway, I was told that is the best finish but now I'm concerned about going straight up gloss finish. Our door faces east and gets plenty morning light and I just feel like it's too much if full gloss (? ). What have you ladies done with regards to finish choice?

In my opinion semi gloss has the right amount of sheen. I think gloss would be just too much. But it’s a personal choice. Sometimes SW store do run out of certain kind of paints. Ask them when is the next possible time they’ll get the shipment. I would suggest place an order and wait. I did that too a while ago when I needed certain kind of paint. Also, just FYI their Emerald trim and doors paint is top of the line. We have used it for all our doors and trim. Although it dries to touch within an hour but it takes one month to completely cure. Once cured the finish is rock solid.

@palua - but what paint exactly are you using?

@timmie5667 how do you mean? It's Sherwin Williams brand called Tricorn Black and I was going to use Semi-gloss but the store said they don't do semi gloss. I guess the comparable is Satin finish but wasn't sure if that or glossy is best for a front door.

All our interior doors are tricorn black and we used flat paint. High or even semi gloss on that deep of a black will show every little tiny imperfection. Just my 2 cents!

@sheelah definitely good point.  I am hesitant on the gloss for that reason as well but I know that matte would look terrible. I'm almost reconsidering the black.

@palua what does your door look like now? It’s not that flat would look bad it’s just harder to clean.

It would look great black. I’d probably do a satin if I were you, but in the highest quality exterior paint you can get.

@sheelah yea, based on responses here and on a friend suggestion that did the same, the satin was the comparable to semi gloss and kind of the most recommended. I guess we'll have see how it goes.  My next post on mamatribe will probably be "how to manage fingerprints on my front door"

@palua lol! If you do satin it will still be wipeable but not super shiny. The higher the gloss on black the more reflective it is as well, meaning not as deep of a black color. Just something to consider!

@sheelah totally get you! The paint that I chose is actually also an interior paint that is used a lot as exterior so hopefully it'll survive the elements.  We're going to be buying a whole new wood door but for now painting until we get it so I guess I can deal with these potential problems considering it's temporary. Thank you for the advice!
