Hii ladies!  Kind of random BUT we are going to be new kitten parents here in about a week!Hii ladies! Kind of random BUT we are going to be new kitten parents here in about a week! We have never had a kitten before so all you cat mommas out there, I need your help! Spam me with all the do’s and dont’s of a new kitten. Best litter brands for odor control (yes I will be cleaning the litter box daily), favorite food brands and treats, did you use that “calming” wall plug in?, good place to find cat towers or scratching post? Help! I want to make this an easy transition for our new fur baby. *edit the kitten will be coming home, neutered and vaccinated, at approximately 2months old, to a two year old mini goldendoodle-super playful but mature enough to know when enough is enough! So he will have a fur buddy, that woofs instead of meows*

Best to get two at once. We had the kittens in a bedroom for the first two/three weeks together before introducing them to the rest of the house (stairs, banaster, a dog and another cat). They had each other so the transition was shared together (they were 6 and 5 months old when we brought them home). We use Fresh Step (I’m sure there is better. We clean the box every 3-4 days because they are far away from life). We have 4 litter boxes for three cats. The cat towers we have are from Pet Supply’s Plus (coupons are awesome). We also have a million different foil and fabric toys around the house. During this shut-in my son made a box cat house and prior made at least 10 other box houses for our kittens, (just masking tape, scissors, and lots of markers and boxes).

Congrats! I have had cats all my life, they’re the best! The best litter I have ever found for odor and just general clumping is the arm and hammer slide. We have 2 cats and you cannot smell the box at all. We have never used the plug ins but my parents do for their anxious cat and they feel it’s helping some. Harder treats will help their teeth stay strong but some cats just want the softer ones. You may buy a ton of different foods, treats, toys etc and the cat will let you know what they prefer! Have fun!

Love cats  but scheduled feedings so it doesn’t get overweight! it’s very common in cats, but also very unhealthy.

Clay litter for a kitten! Clumping litters are dangerous if ingested and kittens can be rather toddler-like with eating things that aren’t food.

Once the kitten is a little older, you can phase out the clay and replace it with clumping. I’m with the rest of these ladies that Arm & Hammer is the best!

I use the clump and seal arm and hammer litter, and bought my tower from PetSmart! I probably overpaid, but my cat loves it so I’m okay with it. She only eats simply nourish chicken stew (I’ll comment pics), but Purina proplan is also great. Dry food she eats purina proplan. I also recommend getting a water fountain to prevent water from sitting out too long and becoming stale or collecting hair and dust. Not sure how old the kitten is, but definitely feed often and in small amounts if under a year and only wet food if 8-12 weeks. When we got our cat, we introduced her to a room at a time since cats become comfortable with surroundings first, then people. There’s so much more to know, congratulations on your new kitten!

The calming plugins shouldn't be necessary, but if you do want/need them definitely buy from Amazon because the pet stores mark them up like crazy. (We have a cat with bladder issues, so had to use them for awhile to mitigate stress. ) And the best thing I've ever found for cleaning cat pee is OdorXit. This shit is liquid gold, and if you buy the concentrate it lasts forever.

I have heard to get two kittens at once. It's easier for them to adjust and a playmate for each other. Good luck and enjoy!

My advice is to get it fixed early. I wasn’t able to get ours in before the quarantine and she keeps going into heat like every 3 weeks.

@subalternate he will be fixed upon picking him up!

THANK YOU LADIES! Has anyone ever experienced bringing a kitten into a new home with a young dog? The shelter said the cat has seen and been around dogs here and there but not consistently. Best way to introduce them?

I brought two kittens home this past Fall - I started them in the bedroom until they got used to the smell and sounds of our two dogs. After a few weeks I put the dogs in the bedroom for part of the day and let the kittens roam the house. Did that on and off for about a week, and then let the dogs and kittens meet! They adjusted really well that way, I think. We have two small kids also, so they got used to them playing in the bedroom with them also. It’s a mad house here, but they are always around us and not scared or startled by the dogs or kids at all!

Fresh step litter has best odor control. Right now we have arm and hammer. First time we've smelt anything! Long ago my roommate had a tiny kitten. It was so wild! She should hunt and pounce my eyelids as I slept! Crazy all night playing. So make a game plan for night! Like really really wear him out. Put away noisy toys. Its typical for kittens to be active at night. If scratching becomes a problem, even with posts, nails caps save your furniture. I am an absolute cat person! I love my kittys to pieces  Iwould have 4 if I could! Congratulations

The absolute BEST litter is Boxiecat. Since you have a dog, consider getting a covered litter box. It's so so so important to make sure your cat has a high moisture diet, so they really shouldn't be on a kibble only diet. Cats tend to not drink much and need 2, 200 licks from the water bowl to consume just a 1/4 cup of water. Call Two Bostons Pet Boutique for food recommendations.

Keep the kitten in a smaller Space to start. When you bring them home, put them in the litter box first, and they explore their new home from the most important part— where to go to the bathroom! I love pet supplies plus for food, treats, etc. A mini water fountain is great so they’re encouraged to drink. Otherwise, a little wet food daily is important to help them get moisture for their kidneys

We got kittens last year. What we did was put them into a bedroom and had them in there for a week and then out a baby gate up with other bedrooms closed to have them explore the hallway and bedroom, but eventually they started jumping over the gate. We feed our Blue Wilderness and we use tidy cat litter. Also the ring that come on gallons of milk when open them the cats love those as toys . We have them all over my house.

My cats love the corrugated cardboard style scratchers. I find the most economical at Ross/TJ Max/Marshall’s. We do wet food for breakfast and dry food the rest of day. We have never done a schedule and never had overweight cats. Fountain for sure, mine love it. Chewy. com often has good sales for everything. Have fun and love on your new kitty.

We use the pine litter. It's the best, doesn't smell, and is way better for the environment. We bought our cat tree off Chewy, we have a 7 foot one and our cats love it. I definitely recommend getting two if you can, they bond really well and they'll play with each other. Our kittens were adopted separately but they play together all night long. When we had the first kitten, he'd bother us all night. In case you use essential oils, look up what's safe for cats because most of them are toxic.
