Classic Cinemas has confirmed that the Ogden 6 WILL be torn down as part of the second Costco. I am ANGRY at our City Government for informing us that Costco was a replacement for the long-empty KMart, WITHOUT ever mentioning that Ogden 6 would be demolished as well! Even in the map accompanying the “good news” on the City’s FB page, the Ogden 6 was shown as still being present! With this news, I change from embracing Costco to HATING it! Who wants to join me in protesting that the second Costco’s layout MUST allow the Ogden 6 to remain?

I read an article last week that an average Costco is 140K sq ft and the old kmart is about 90k So needed another 50k ft, the theater gone is not surprising…. H mart is probably safe Dollar store will probably be gone… I wouldn’t be surprised if h mart is the only store that is left open

Well I just posted the link from Ogden 6 stating that they are being forced to close and hopefully they will find a new location
by (630 points)
If they have a lease, you can't just force them to close. Compensation would be involved.
by (4k points)
@chalmer17630 I would hope so after all the work they've just put into it.
by (630 points)
@quadrangle115 I'm guessing they wouldn't have done all of that work if they didn't have a long lease.
by (4k points)
@chalmer17630 that's what I was thinking I mean they just dumped a whole bunch of money not knowing, I guess, this was coming. I'm going to assume

No, for someone who literally Lives a block away, I can’t WAIT FOR COSTCO! That whole strip mall has been an eye sore for years! Yes it’s sad they need to close the theater but it’s time to move on! BRING ON COSTCO! If you don’t live close you have no clue how awesome it’s going to be,

@evelinaeveline wowser. Jeez.
by (6.4k points)
The increased traffic isn't going to be awesome. And I do live nearby. Yes, the strip mall is an eyesore. But that theater has been here since 1976. Why does it have to be bulldozed? Isn't there enough room for both?
by (630 points)
@attorn Kmart is half the size that Costco requires - not to mention if left oriented the way it is currently it would be hard to fit a gas station. I agree the City will need to manage traffic, especially on Iroquois heading in to neighborhoods.
by (600 points)
@attorn I don’t have an issue if they keep it or not, i agree why can’t they have both but I am not going to boycott Costco if they don’t. That’s silly

I hope they find a way for the theater to stay! I am not worried at all about traffic. That mall used to be the go to spot. for shopping. K-mart all the small shops full, the theater was crazy busy and we had restaurants, a walgreens and a super busy Dominick's in there. PLUS all the teens in town hanging out there. Ogden was built for traffic. we just haven't had any in a long time
by (490 points)
@bethesda I live on Iroquois and I am worried about traffic. It's already the cut through for commuters and they fly down the street ignoring the 25 mph speed limit. Iroquois homes are just feet from the street and we have Arrowhead park with a playground for small kids, soccer games/practices and other sports gatherings. Since I've lived on this street most of my life, I can tell you that despite that mall being mostly dead for the last 10-15 years, the traffic has worsened; likely with all the large corporations that have moved their HQ's to Naperville. Our neighborhoods have already starting banding together to make sure that our concerns are heard and that they city does everything they can to make our neighborhood safe! :) But at the same time I am excited about Costco and hope that Ogden 6 finds a new home near by.

I’ll miss Ogden 6, I went there in the 70s and 80s, but Costco is going to be a huge game-changer for that whole area, and likely will lead to revitalization of the entire East Ogden corridor.

Theatres still open in Naperville, or nearby: Regal on Diehl, Regal on Boughton, Hollywood Palms, AMC Showplace, Seven Bridges, Studio Movie Grill in Wheaton. I think we'll be ok! This Costco closes a major gap in their existing coverage.

Costco employs 100 full time and an additional 100 part time employees. Generates more revenue than the entire downtown business district. Will be a catalyst for more business opportunities and employees along the Ogden corridor. This is huge for Naperville. Maybe the theatre has the funds to move to the old ford dealership location. Another eye sore for years!
by (2.8k points)
But my memories! I'm happy to see a business like Costco move in. Sentimentality over a movie theater is just silly.

@symposium7291 it’s not like it’s beautiful nostalgic theatre like The Tivoli. It’s a theatre in a dead strip mall

@halloo they just had to relocate their downers grove/Westmont store down Ogden because that strip mall got torn down. Not a good month for that company.

The lose of the Ogden 6 would be most undesirable. But a Costco in this area would bring the kind of financial prosperity to this area the the Ogden 6 has not. The kind of prosperity needed to revitalize this area of Naperville. With a Costco here there will be increased interest by current property owners and possible developers to invest the money need to made these changes happen. Will all the changes that will come to this area be welcome by everyone living in this area? Doubt full, it really happens that change makes everyone happy. This change, however, is the best chance Naperville has had in over 20 years of revitalizing this area of our city and we should not miss out on this opportunity simply to save one business.

by (2.2k points)
@bristle there’s really not another place along that part of Ogden that has available building area plus the parking lot to handle a Costco. It would be dumb to keep the theater and tell Costco to pound sand.
by (2.8k points)
@euell212 you know a place with the wherewithal that Costco has already looked at multiple properties and decided what would work best.
by (790 points)
@bristle both cinnamark and regal have $5-$6 deals! You won’t loose your savings  and you’ll gain a Costco!
by (550 points)
@euell212 for the third time. i never said I didn’t want to the Costco …‍♀️

@bristle Classic Cinemas is looking at sites to relocate. Hope they are close to the current one, so convenient for us! But happy about the Costco too!

Why do people hate good paying jobs? How many minimum wage people does Ogden 6 employ? Costcos employ hundreds, and at good wages. This sentimentality is stupid.

@symposium7291 thank you! I totally agree with you the mall is Such a mess right now it’s going to be Awesome!

by (4k points)
@evelinaeveline they just renovated it it's just starting to get popular again it's beautiful inside. They have the best heated Lounge seats anywhere! That's where I go now to see all my movies they have all the new releases now. Big big big huge Improvement on what it's been like. It's a shame after putting all that money in there that they're going to have to relocate which is what I hope they do
by (2.8k points)
@quadrangle115 maybe they'll sell you one!
by (600 points)
@quadrangle115 I agree I Hope they can relocate it that would be lovely !

@evelinaeveline Ogden 6 is pretty much always packed, honestly that’s what gets all the people in that shopping mall mostly. Especially on the weekends you can’t even find anywhere to park.

I just came back from the Dollar Store and while I am excited at getting a CostCo and not happy about losing a movie theater, I am beyond thrilled that with CostCo coming in, they will now fix the horrible pot holes all over that parking lot! It's like a war zone over there!

The theater was nice. long ago. It simply doesnt have the draw. Costco does provide a need, the jobs, fills so many things. The emotional attachment there is to the theater is nice but not practical. Looking forward to being able to shop at Costco on the way home from work.
by (2.2k points)
@cheyennecheyne it was remodeled last year, it is awesome now.
by (990 points)
@emplace I was there 2 years ago. Meh. It was not one I've been back to as it lacks much appeal. The seating is marginally acceptable, there is no food service nor bar unlike many others now and tickets are not fabulously priced for the venue's lack of offering. SMG has $5 Tuesdays where full service gets top name movies and everything else. Shrug.

You know when I first heard it I was upset and I jumped to sign. Many things happen for a reason, Costco is a much worthier thing. It’s always hard to say goodbye but in the end everything happens for a good reason! It will be good for the next gen kids  change is hard but it’s ok! It is what it is. I’m definitely bothered don’t get me wrong, if we can save it with still having the Costco there I would be all for it.

Yes, leave it just the way it is so a few people can go to their favorite theater because it has commfy cozy seats. There's nothing there that's any kind of a huge draw, take it all down. There that sounded better. I tried sounding diplomatic before and someone said I was tossing shade. I guess that means hiding what you rally mean by dancing around the subject. There, no shade.

I know any time we have been in the last several years it has been pretty vacant. granted I don't go in prime time and never in the first few weeks of a release, but honestly the only nice thing about it is the memories and the new seats. concessions are better at other theatres and now that so many businesses have moved on there is no other draw to that area now. Personally I'm not sure we need another Costco. maybe a mattress firm?

by (4k points)
@trodden64616 that theater is great they renovated the whole thing they have heated lounge chairs computers in there to print your own tickets out new concession stand. It's really nice inside it's the only theater we go to now to watch movies and they have new releases now we just saw the new Star Wars movie there among others. I'm sure they'll find a new place to relocate

Costco needs the property to build. The theater has been on 6 months lease renewals due to impending closure due to financial feasibility. Costco will bring life to our side of town as well as jobs. The list of one theater who was already financially struggling is a small price to pay. It’s amazing to me that this is even a discussion. The theater would most likely be closing anyway as well as other businesses because that side of town was dying. We are so lucky they have chosen that site to build!
by (680 points)
Disagree. the new renovation of Ogden 6 has actually helped the other businesses by it. On a Friday night or Saturday the parking lot is full. People going to O6 stop by the Dollar Tree to get candy for their show. Las Palmas is also busy with patrons going to, or coming from, the theaters. In the past 3 years since I opened my school there my student population has increased. 20% of my newer customers have signed up because they saw us as they were passing by to go to or come from the theaters. So we are not dying, but in one quick swoop of convenience from Costco, and we will be dead.
by (1.3k points)
@ravish. Omg. If they were truly making money then they wouldn’t be on a 6 mos lease as they stated in their own response to losing the site. We are the big winner with Costco coming
by (680 points)
@palaearctic they were not on a 6 month lease. The landlord has to give us a 6 month notice if they sell the property and we have to move.

Costco didn't cause Ogden 6 to close. It's a piece of property that was available to a good company. It's like blaming a person that bought a foreclosed house for causing the previous people from losing their house. One thing doesn't have anything to do with the other.

And just HOW MANY signatures do you think you'll NEED on a petition, for the city to reconsider this BUSINESS decision? Realistically. And for people thinking that COSTCO needs to reimburse Ogden 6 for this? This is a Naperville BUSINESS decision. Costco has nothing to do with real estate, zoning, land rights decision. Everyone's NASTALGIA is what's driving the discord about this.
by (600 points)
@guildsman46 people need to get over “saving” Ogden theater! Move on people!
by (1.6k points)
@evelinaeveline Nothing. I repeat NOTHING outweighs the plus and positives of putting a Costco in there. Yeah, traffic WILL BE A BITCH (which Naperville WILL address, although we probably won’t experience the outcome till AFTER it’s all said and done. ), but what ELSE besides the NOSTALGIA of Ogden Six has people upset about this? (I already addressed the traffic above. )

Owners of commercial property should have no right to sell their property to whatever business they want. They should just obey the most vocal activists who want to save the XYZ building because they went there growing up or because it's pretty. Maybe that should apply to owners of private property too - if the neighbors don't like your buyers because they're going to cut down a rhodendron bush those neighbors could petition to block the sale. /sarc
