Anyone travel internationally with a infant? Thinking of a family trip to Spain with a 10 month old and 12 year old. Is it safe/doable or should i just wait till the little one is older and stick to something domestic.

We travel internationally with our toddler twice a year and have since he was born. The flight is rough, of course, but if you have everything you need and a few new toys, it's very worth it. The only thing I would suggest that you might not be aware of is that you can request a bassinet seat on many airlines. It's a free service. Even if you're 10 month old never sleeps in it the extra room (wide enough for a cheapy bassinet! ) Can be really worth it. Incidentally we just booked our trip to Spain last night. Right now Norwegian airlines has really inexpensive flights. they're considered a budget airline but I have found the seats to be very large The windows are big and they each have their own dimmer switches.

Do you requestcthe bassinet when buying the tickets or afterwards by calling the airline. Also during what month are you flying to spain?

Hi! @hurd614 request it after you buy the tickets and you do so just by calling. Usually the airline website will tell you if they offer it, but sometimes it can be hard to find. You'll need your reservation number handy. We're heading to Barcelona in the middle of April.

@lorraine5 & @affinal - just booked a trip to Barcelona and traveling with our two kids (3&4)! First overseas trip as a family. Is it worth bringing a stroller so they can take turns? Any other tips?!

Yay! Totally. @hurd614 get a free stroller check too and we've found that the cheapy umbrella ones work just fine. My only other suggestions are to make a list of everything you'll actually need, but try not to overpack as most things are readily available. Also bring some brand new toys that they've never seen before for the flight. So exciting! When are you going?

@lorraine5 - Thanks for the tips! We are going end of April/early May! Planning to download books/videos and head to dollar store for little trucks/toys. We booked the redeye so praying they'll sleep! (packing melatonin for everyone just in case! )

Travel with little one sure is tough on mom. Little kid got uncomfortable with air pressure on flight. Prepare wisely and it would be worth it. My advise bring everything you need. Including diaper. I was hoping to buy, when I get to destination, but quality is not as good and it leak!

We are expats living here in Chicago. We travel to Europe all the time (UK annually, France and Spain last couple of years, and France again this summer). We will have a 3yo and 5mo old in the next trip. It’s def doable and completely safe! I’d say the only part I dread is the red-eye and associated jetlag because it’s very hard to sleep as an adult when you have a child to stop falling off the seat/keep buckled in when there’s turbulence etc etc). But I find going there easier than the return because when you get there everyone just stays up late and that’s fun. Coming back is excruciating with little ones though because everyone is waking up at 2am/3am etc and it takes us a good 1-2 weeks to get back to normal. But your 10 year old will probably be much easier with it than my toddler who can’t understand time zones yet. As for practicalities, there’s really no difference to car hire/hotels etc than language barriers, and the experience of other cultures for your 10 year old is so worth the extra effort in terms of logistics. Further to @anette’s comment on diapers, it’s worth taking enough for a day or two but scope out where the nearest hyper market (Carrefour is the big one) is and just go there to get supplies. It has all the major brands like pampers etc (just know how to convert to kg for sizing). Baby food pouches are less of a thing, however, but you can get some there too. If you pump milk still then just be aware that your pump might need a dif adapter to run (UK voltage is 240V, I think Europe is 210!? ) Otherwise tap water is totally safe in MOST places in Spain. The coffee is amazing, so is the bread, pastries, the food is out of this world. ahhhhhhhhh I miss Europe

Just out of curiosity during what month did you go to spain?

@hurd614 Early October, we went to a wedding outside of Barcelona, the weather was perfect to cool side. I also went on a Madrid/northern Portugal/Bilbao road trip in Early September when my son was in utero and the weather there was gorgeous: dry, perpetually sunny, hot in the day, cool at night.

We went to the UK last spring with a 16 month old and I imagine 10 months will be easier because they won't want to walk/run around everywhere :) He adjusted to the time change better than we did. My dad came with us so it was nice to have 3 sets of hands, especially in circumstances where someone had the stroller, someone had the kid, and someone had the diaper bag and/or anything else we had with us! No issues finding diapers or pouches there, but staying in an Airbnb instead of a hotel was very helpful, especially those that have baby equipment available in them!

It's definitely safe and doable, but mostly-likely won't be an easy & relaxing vacation  In my personal experience & research, around 10 months to 3 years are the hardest for long flights, changing routine, etc. But I found that my son enjoys himself and makes huge leaps & developmental progress when we travel internationally. So there's that. ‍♀️

For us it was way easier to travel with an infant than with a toddler. Both domestic and international.

Ditto to the way easier with an infant. We took our daughter to Brazil around 2 months and it was a dream compared to the toddler years.

I advise going before your littlest starts walking!

We have flown with the kids, now 7, internationally since they were 6 months. I would make the following suggestions: 1. They get their own seats. 2. Assending is fine for babies, pressure only builds in way down. Bottles and pouches are your child's ears best friends. 3. Baggies. So many baggies. Clothes. Food. Toys. More toys. More food. Dirty stuff. Vomit. Did I mention clothes or food? @hurd614 are the planets' worst nightmare. 3. A Trunki is great for kids to ride on. CARES harness are great for older young kids. 4. And, most importantly, the younger you start the sooner they become great travelers! Everyone understands an infant or young child crying or acting up. Most everyone dislikes a child crying or acting up.
