My husband and I are coming (sans kids) to check out the neighborhood this weekend. We will be moving there in May! Our plan is to drive around this Friday and Saturday to check stuff out. We’re meeting with a realtor to see rentals and homes for sale. Are there any must-see places for our very first time in OP?

Oak Park Conservatory, Hemingway District, Downtown Oak Park, Harrison Arts District, check out the Parks District website for the locations of all the parks/playgrounds near the properties you’re looking at.

When we were looking for homes our realtor took us on a little driving tour of the area. It was really helpful!

How old are your kids? Check out proximity to parks. Also check out forest park, river forest, Berwyn, and elmwood park to see if those neighborhoods feel right to you because you might be able to get what you want at a lower $$. Be sure to drive around different parts of OP. The NW corner is a lot different than the SW corner in terms of house density and suburban be urban feel. Scratch on Lake was my first meal in OP, and Ann the bartender / waiter was a great intro to the village.

Drive by our beautiful English Tudor on 900 block of North Marion. It’ll be going on the market in about 3 weeks! Best block in town! Great families. We’re sad to leave them!

We enjoyed renting at Oak Park City apartments before buying. Great and responsive management/ & maintenance and by far the best storage space (vs Vantage, Emerson, 100 Forest).

@karakorum so glad you liked it. Full disclosure. I'm on the board, but we are very proud if what we've accomplished. It's been open for 4 years. The community supported and worked to bring it to fruition for 4 or 5 years before that!

Brown Cow Ice Cream in Forest Park was the first place I went to when we were thinking of moving to the area. Loved it so much and amazingly we moved within walking distance. :)

Drive or walk down Forest Ave. to see the FLW district, then have a Hot Toddy at Hemingway’s Bistro.
