Morning!  Question/ advice needed:: my LO will start Kinder in the fall, I'm worried her current teacher (me) isn't teaching her the right stuff to be KG ready.Morning! Question/ advice needed:: my LO will start Kinder in the fall, I'm worried her current teacher (me) isn't teaching her the right stuff to be KG ready. Any KG teachers on here that can advise on what I can focus on? I'm doing letters, numbers, and trying sight words. I am NOT the arts and crafts type of mom so I lack in that department too. Thanks!

Best answer
Letter recognition and sounds, spelling first name, recognizing numbers to 10 and counting to 30, shapes and colors, and working with fine motor skills through cutting, coloring, Legos, play doh, etc. Social is huge, so even just playing board games shows how to take turns and is a great skill to practice.

I wouldn't push academics too much. Make it fun and just try to do the things suggested. Your child may not be ready for all of this, even just introducing some letters and numbers is fine. Many kids come to kindergarten and do not know all of what was listed above.

I'm worried as well! I'm an RN in a local hospital. So I've been working some and not being the best teacher. It's hard!

@mauretania we are all doing the best we can. These ideas the ladies have given are great! I they help you too!

@mauretania your daughter is in my son’s class at LH. I haven’t been doing much with him either. I ordered kindergarten workbooks and he doesn’t want to do them.  They learn SO much at LH, I’m honestly not too worried about kindergarten. When with these few months “off”, I think they’ll still be ahead of some kids entering kindergarten.

Former PreK and K teacher here! Short answer = Joy of READING! Make reading a part of every day life. Have books in every room of the house. Have dedicated family independent reading time so she sees you reading for pleasure. Talk about the books you’re readying and why you like them. Take a walk and point out letters and numbers in everyday life vs. flash cards. Reading (and any learning) should never be forced. Don’t focus on reading levels. If she wants to read the encyclopedia—go for it! If she wants to read a “baby” book—sure! Engage and enjoy ♥️  If you want book recommendations, let me know

There are still kids who enter kindergarten with zero instruction. I’m sure you are doing great! My 3rd child will start kindergarten in the fall too. We go to wolfs crossing. I have a background in elementary education and have some cool stuff i’ve been doing with my girls. I can share if you PM me your email address. However, please keep in mind that everyone is “crisis learning” and the best thing you can do is spend time with your kid! she will be fine next year!

@terina You are so welcome, just be patient, your child right now, is probably the smartest kid going to kindergarten, because you are taking the time to teach them, some parents are leaving it all up to the teacher, my granddaughter came home and said, most kids in her pre-school class dint even know their mother or fathers real name,  now that’s crazy, I teach all my grandkids, what they need to know. Have fun and be safe out here. ❤️

@babism8095 thank you for the nice words. I'm honestly trying to keep her busy while my 4th grader does her stuff. And teaching her things are easy for me to help both kids. Thanks, Be safe as well

@terina Thank you.

@terina have her make a journal and each day she can draw a story and dictate the story to you. If she’s ready she can even write some simple words herself. It makes for an awesome keepsake down the ride. Practices fine motor and language. My preschool students LOVE their journals!

@snell213 tjats a great idea. She knows how to write 3 words by herself but the drawing part I will definitely try!
