Ultimately short term returns are not important for checking in on your retirement investments. Short of having to rebalance. Your goal is to maintain your target asset allocations that fit your long term goal. Trying to adjust your holdings to increase your yearly return will only lead you down path of constant market timing through unecessary trading and rebalancing.

@shorthand that's a fine opinion to have but I'm quite young and seeing most people get 2x the return of myself, I'd like to reassess where I'm investing. If I were older, I might not care but as a young person I'm willing to take those risks. It's important to always be assessing your investments and determining if you have them in the best place possible.

@shorthand I'm interested in knowing what you think about rebalancing- when IS it appropriate? It better to just not touch retirement at all?

I used a strategy from tsp calc and tweaked it a bit depending on what was happening with the market at the time. A happy +30%. Checkout tspcalc and tspcenter. Both are extremely useful if you want to get hands on with your tsp.

@myrt53260 thanks! I can't contribute anymore but I'd like to do what I can with what's in there.

@tentacle47 those websites can help with that as well. Tspcenter is forum based as well with a load of useful info.
