Those who have flown spirit - how does it work if I don't buy seats? It is truly randomly selected by the computer or is it more like open seating? It's my daughter's first time flying so she is a little uneasy about us being separated so I'm willing to pay for seats if that's best. She is 12, so not little.  **Yes I know spirit sucks and yes I know we will pay for all extras, if you have anything negative to say - just keep scrolling. Please. Kindness costs nothing. **

When you check in it will assign you a seat. If you are on the same reservation it will be next to each other

We actually love spirit and never had problems when we used to fly at least twice a year. When you check in the seats are given to you so as long as you check in together you’ll be seated next to each other. Try to check in right away if you want close to the front

Spirit doesn't separate parents and under age kids

They separated my family, but it was back in 2010. Maybe things have changed.

@fairway74 that's weird. I flew with my daughter twice now and they wouldn't separate us. But that could also be because I checked us in at the same time

We flew with my parents and my son when he was a baby. I remember fighting with them because they wanted to separate us. We did not pay for assigned seats. They were really mean about it too. But that was 10 years ago, things may have changed.

@fairway74 that's horrible. Sorry you went through that.

I always buy the seats. When my boys were little we got separated on their first time flying. So now I always pay for picking our seats.

We’ve never had any problems flying with spirit. We never pay to select our seats and they’ve always grouped our family together.

First off spirit does NOT suck. It gets you where you need to be. I have traveled spirit many times and as long as you pay attention to the baggage fees it’s fine. I actually enrolled into the yearly membership because my daughter would often travel for free. They are like most airlines and if you don’t pay for seating together they will more then likely still seat you together. Worst case is they don’t but the agents at the airport will do their best to accommodate you. Our first time flying I paid for all 4 of us to be together. Our next trip I didn’t and we still sat together! So therefore I’ve never paid for our seats to be together. FYI check American because I recently flew with them and they ended up being cheaper and they allow a carry on and personal item meaning no extra fee!

Look into southwest. Sometimes when you add all the extras fees it's worth it. They will seat you first with little kids.

I don’t mind spirit at all. We sat together as a family and did not get separated.

It’s only $20 more to buy seats so I would suggest to buy seats. That way you won’t have to board until almost the very end since you won’t be worried about someone taking your seats. It’s still so much cheaper than any other flights it’s worth it. Where are you guys flying to?

@ootid Fort Meyers, FL

We've flown roundtrip twice. I do not pay extra for seats and the boys and I were able to stay together no problem.

I always purchase without the seats and when I get there, they put us together.

They’ll keep you together, just verify at the gate. I have flown spirit six times in the last month.

We fly them often and love them. We dont need any extras. We always check in online at 24hrs ahead and have always been sat together :)

@hunt4 Ann can you pick ur seat when you check in or is it truly computer generated? Here's the thing. me my daughter didn't book together so I'm beyond nervous!
by (310 points)
You dont get to pick your seats that way, the computer generates them for you. But since we book together, we have always been sat together. If you didnt book together I would definitely pay for your seat ahead of time!
