Parents who have kiddos who had a tonsillectomy recently. how long were they held after surgery? Are they released after anesthesia wears off or do they watch them For a while? Just trying to get an idea of how long of a day we will have/how long we’ll be gone.

Depends. They usually monitor the patient until they come out of recovery and are stable. Usually 1-2 hours after surgery. But that depends on the patient.

My daughter was released shortly after her procedure. She had it done last summer when she was 8. The recovery was a full two weeks.

Just have to say, I had mine out as an adult, 2 years ago. I hope your little one does well! The recovery for me was awful. You usually get to go home a few hours post op.

@alternation7492 Oh, WOW! I was out of work for 3 weeks. It was the worst surgery as an adult by far.

@vogul3 same! Mine was awful.

@vogul3 I’m supposed to get mine out soon and I’m dreading it  my plan is to do it over the summer so I don’t have to worry about driving my daughter to and from school everyday. I just heard recovery is awful

@sinistrocular Aw I’m so sorry! Honestly, I wasn’t prepared nor did I believe how tough it’d be. Just make sure you have plenty of popsicles and jello on hand. That’s about all I could handle. And remind yourself that it will be worth it. I haven’t been sick since! Wishing you all the best!

@vogul3 I’ve been sick 3 times since my last visit with ENT which was less than a month ago so I know it’ll be worth it!

I want to say my daughter (5 at the time) was released an hour after. They made her eat a popsicle before they let her go, too. Hers was done at an outpatient surgery center. My son (2. 5 at the time) was done at the hospital and we had to stay like three hours. Both kids recovery was not bad at all. They just hated taking the medicine they said it tasted salty

My son just had his out 2. 5 weeks ago. We got there at 6:30, we went to the pre op room by 7, he was out of the procedure by 7:40, we got called back to post op at 8:15 and we were out of the hospital by 9:45. Hope that helps! And yes, they waited for him to come out of the anesthesia and attempt to eat a popsicle/drink juice.

My daughter had hers our at 8 at the Edward's out patient center. Surgery lasted about 1hr and then we were in recovery for about 30min. She ate her popsicle and drank some apple juice and we were out. Her recovery was great. We prepped the house with soft foods, popsicles and tons of electrolyte rich drinks to prevent dehydration. She slept most of the day of surgery once we got home. Overall it was a good experience for us. Our doctor was Dr. Banas with Dupage medical group. She was awesome. We will be going back to her soon for my 5yo.

My son had this done in December, along with adenoids. He stayed for a couple hours after. Have them give your kid pain meds when they get out. My son was in a ton of pain and it took forever for them to find the doctor to order. 5 days later we ended up at the hospital for pain management. I won’t lie, it was rough on him. Good luck!

My daughter had hers out at 3. About 25 min before surgery, 20 minutes for actual surgery (tonsils and adenoids), I got to go back while anesthesia wore off and hold her, about 15 minutes, then in a recovery room for about a half hour. We had to be there by 7am and I think we were home by 10ish.

I can't answer for kids but I had this done as an adult. Just wanted to say my most painful day was day 4. Day 1 was easy, 2 ok day 3 way getting harder but day 4- when it was starting to heal and pull tight- hurt. Just be prepared in case.
