Hey moms!  I’m thinking about getting my daughter a hedgehog.Hey moms! I’m thinking about getting my daughter a hedgehog. She is highly allergic to dogs cats and bunnies but she LOVES animals. She has been begging me for really any kind of animal but lizards and snakes freak me out lol. The problem I’m having is I don’t know if she would have an allergy to hedgehogs, does anyone know of maybe a pet store she can hold one to see if she has a reaction?

My daughter has a lot of allergies. And anything that needed hay in its cage was a huge problem for her not necessarily the animal. Just something to think about. Not sure what a hedgehog needs. We wound up with a lizard. Not so cuddly.

I also recommend you to contact Jenna at Prickle Pack Hedgehogs she is the best breeder around and she will be glad, to speak to you! Also she will let you come to her house to visit with the hogs and ask any further questions. Shes far but worth it. Morning star is great as well

I'm not sure if you are considering guinea pigs at all but there's an adoption event tomorrow at Pet Supplies Plus in Bolingbrook. I guess just do your research on any pet. One of my neighbors had a hedgehog and it had some very specific care needs.

My daughter had 1. Just an FYI the cage area smells so bad when you wake in the morning, it's something you need to clean everyday.! They sleep all day up on the wheel all night. They dont get off the wheel to poop they just let it go. It's a mess, the fun lasted maybe 2 weeks with my daughter

We adopted 2 guinea pigs from fur angels animal sanctuary and all 4 of our kids love them. They have a website with adoptable animals and hold adoption events.

I had one in college. I got him as a baby. I am allergic to cats. I was fine when the hedgehog was a baby but was really allergic to him when he got bigger. If his prickles touched me, i got hives.

My daughter had a hedgehog. She was great at the beginning. We handled her lots but after her first quilling she didn’t like to be held at all. We tried everything. She had the coolest cafe setup and she literally only hung out on her wheel which had to be washed every day. She was litter trained otherwise. We used fleece for her bedding so she didn’t get mites. She came to us with them. We got her from a breeder but they are in the bedding. The fleece needed to be washed in non scented soap in its own load. Her quills definitely caused irritation on our skin. When she would quill bathing her helped but the poor thing was not happy. She eventually passed after years of me reminding my daughter to feed and bathe her. Now we have a bearded dragon. He’s so sweet. Not as much maintenance for sure. My daughter goes away to college in the fall and I guess he’ll be my responsibility. Good thing I love that little fella.

We love our Ball Python - she is literally a pet rock (she is in her cave 99% of the time) and very docile when we do hold her. Go to the NARBC in Tinley Park March 14 & 15. They have some amazing animals there - one lady had all of her chameleons out on a tree. It is an experience but get there early. It is packed and the parking is hard to come by.

Scotts's Amimal Expo has tons of different kinds of animals you could check out. Maybe she would find something she didn't expect to love there.
