Has anyone had any luck filing for unemployment as an independent contractor? Asking for my mom. I helped her apply and it says she will receive $0 per week. She is a hair stylist and was forced to close her salon. After 30 years, she will have to close permanently if things don’t change soon.

May 11th for self employed. You first have to be denied by traditional unemployment to the apply and be approved for the PUA (pandemic assistance).

Not if she haven’t been paying unemployment insurance there is no wages reported for her that’s why the amount is $0

I too am an independent hair stylist and I got 52 dollars a week for unemployment but at the start of 2019 for 4 weeks I was a w2 employee so I paid a little into it and that might be why I received mine. Also I applied right after quarantine started.
by (2.3k points)
@danaides5832 wait. $52! What about the $600?
by (960 points)
Yes, if you didn’t have that w2 you would’ve gotten zero
by (2.4k points)
@aculeus yes the 600 but the weekly rate I was given was 52 dollars a week
by (2.3k points)
@danaides5832 is the 600 a week or every two?
by (2.4k points)
@aculeus i thought it was every month?
by (6k points)
@aculeus it’s every week. My husband is receiving it via traditional unemployment

Package isn’t ready yet for self employed. Heard may 11th you can file. If she’s a small business owner there are loans out there to help also.

@vicious ya good luck lol
by (3.3k points)
@vicious kabbage. com is where people can easily apply for the payroll assistance loan as a 1099 employee
by (5.1k points)
@vicious those loans are not worth it , unless you have employees. And if you get the loans you cannot get unemployment. My friend got offered only $3000 she makes more than that in a month. That's for the EDI L loan
by (7.8k points)
@narbada just giving people options. I don’t need them so honestly haven’t looked into it. Maybe it is worth it to her to check into it ‍♀️
by (5.1k points)
@vicious yea it's worth it to pay your employees. But and the other hand I have seen business owners employees get mad because they got the loan and employees get paid, so that means no unemployment, which they would make more. Trust me she did it to keep her business open

The governor said to apply now and it will make it easier to get the funds once the self employed can apply
by (4.1k points)
@interloper7 he said too that if you apply early you will get rejected, but this will put you in the system and make it easier when you apply again May 11.
by (420 points)
@josefina correct. Not ideal but thankfully there is support for self employed and part timers

I did — had no issues, I’m a personal trainer. Has she filed as a 1099 in the past few years?
by (5.1k points)
@adrieneadrienne how did you get it? Self-Employed/1099 systems not ready?
by (530 points)
@adrieneadrienne are you 1099? Im a cleaning lady and am not 1099 by any of my customers. I filed, was denied 2 times as the governor says is best. i also downloaded my business license and taxes to IDES through the site. Just trying to be ready!
by (3.3k points)
@highpitched — I applied like regular for UI — I’ve have been a 1099 for years so maybe it depends on your filing status for the past?

@mandragora have her file now! The governor is on every day at 2:30 and each day he was asked about self-employed unemployment. He said everyone should apply now! You will be denied but they will start processing the week of May 11th. Have your mom apply now.

Thanks everyone! I will have her apply again. We have applied twice and keep getting an estimated weekly amount of $0. Hopefully that will change on May 11th! My heart breaks for everyone going through this
by (5.1k points)
@mandragora dont apply again just keep certifying. You apply again it will start your claim over. Just do as I said in last comment

Make sure she applies now and she should upload her tax docs and a copy of her photo ID to the IDES system after she applies. It will help everything go faster.
