@hipolitohipp I did that before it was oddly therapeutic.

My daughter had the the tonsil stones, she had her tonsils removed.
by (1.9k points)
Btw, she was 19 when this happened

@inglis Im 35, and got them last year. I’m looking for a permanent solution. Did she see a ENT? Don’t understand why I got this, I looked at the reasons and I don’t fall in any of those categories lol
by (1.9k points)
@synn83 yes she saw an ENT, I don't remember his name, I can get it for you. She had a sore throat off and on for years. He first ruled out acid reflux. I had never heard of tonsil stones until my daughter had them.

@inglis It’s ok, I will find an ENT and get this taken care of next year. I never heard of this either till I had it, it’s so gross. Thank you for your help.

My doctor had me gargle with peroxide and water once every other day. I haven't had them in over a year now
by (680 points)
@novosibirsk8202 I’ll have to try that, it’s getting bad. I have them on both side of my throat. And noticing more and more pouches.
by (2k points)
@synn83 my doctor used a qtip and gently poked them out too. I dont reccomend if you have an easy gag reflex
by (680 points)
@novosibirsk8202  oh god my gag reflexes are horrible. I’ll look like Linda Blairwitch
by (2k points)
@synn83 lol, well then that's out. You can try a water pick too.

@novosibirsk8202 do not swallow though - you will throw up.

@unction oh yeah definitely.

Is it similar to cryptic tonsils where the food get can get stuck in little pockets? I have this if so and doesn't hurt but told me to gargle with warm salt water.
by (680 points)
@dripping I haven’t heard of that, but I have lots of pouches. I’ll have to look into that.

@synn83 yes the dentist was the one who noticed it but as long as there is no pain they typically dont remove them

Omg i just started getting them they are so disgusting! I gargle with listerine and warm salt water, but when the COVID madness ends will see an ENT to see if there’s a more permanent solution. I hate them.

Honestly? I get them when I’m sick. Listerine rinses help keep them at bay. I also poke them out with a cotton swab. I’ve never had a doctor willing to do ANYTHING
by (2.7k points)
@connected Same! I get them right before I get a bad sinus infection or cold and I’ve seen 3 different ent

Gargle with warm salt water. Dr. Caniglia is an ENT. I highly recommend him.

I second Dr. Caniglia. I’ve gotten them for years. like, 20 years. I had my tonsils removed last summer (I also struggled with strep and sore throats at the same time and that’s ultimately why they were removed).

@cluj778 how was the recovery? I need to get mine removed and I’m terrified!

Melissa, days 1 and 2 are nothing. Days 3 through maybe 8 are pretty rough. I have a very high pain tolerance. I get kidney stones a few times a year. So I was “fine”. But I had a friend that went through it at the same time as me and she ended up back in the hospital for pain. So it kind of depends on you and how your body deals with pain. Don’t skip your pain meds, set reminders on your phone, stay hydrated, and don’t push yourself too hard. PS. About day 11ish, your scabs start to fall off. They aren’t normal scabs. they’re this foamy, grey goo that’ll form on your tonsils after surgery. Just be prepared for it to be fucking (excuse the language, but it’s warranted) disgusting.

I get them periodically. I also have a horrible gag reflex, so trying to pop them out or even gargling is difficult for me, but that is what I do to eliminate them.

I talked to regular dr, allergy dr and ENT about mine. They asked questions out of curiosity, but had little to no experience with them. Not much help from them. I hope you get some answers!

I LOVE this guy. Was getting stone after stone about four months before my wedding and he was so receptive. Took me seriously and worked hard to treat me. Then after my wedding helped me learn how to control them and what to eat vs what not to eat. He really is incredible and his bedside manner is like no other. I truly felt that he cared about me as a person, not just a patient.

I get them occasionally. I went to an ENT about a month ago (for something unrelated) and he found I have chronic tonsillitis. I need to have them removed so they gave me a handout and one of the symptoms was tonsil stones.

Treatment is to have your tonsils removed especially if you keep getting them.

Omg yes so gross! My daughter had them and she literally picked them out! I was shocked. They haven’t come back and this was a year or more ago.

I did, we tried antibiotics but I kept getting them. I had my tonsils removed. I am so glad I did. My sinus infections have greatly decreased and my allergies got better

They say the only thing that makes them stop is to remove your tonsils. Might act up during allergy season and I bought an electronic sinus irrigation machine and use the one attachment and squirt them out of my tonsils. I would love to get the surgery but I’m 62 years old and have a-fib and I don’t want to do any unnecessary surgery

Stones can be an indication of mouth breathing in your sleep which is not healthy. Waterpiks can help if you don't have a strong gag reflex.

My son got them a LOT. He ended up getting his tonsils out at about age 27. As expected in an adult, it was a 2 week recovery. Now he is so happy he had it done.
