Highly recommend you don't use one. It will make it seem like your connection is better, but it will actually be worse.

Wifi extenders are never a good option. Avoid them if you can. Just go for a mesh setup

@jefferson I thank you and which mesh is the best product
by (840 points)
@jefferson I have 4 ring camera flood lights and 1 spot light and 2 ring pro door bells
by (1.9k points)
@homozygote0 depends on your budget. google nest wifi and tp-link deco are good basic/simple options for less money. Mid tier ones would be Eero and AmpliFi HD. Expensive ones would be Velop, SURFboard mAX pro, AmpliFi Alien, (and no don’t get the Orbi. too buggy now)
by (1.9k points)
@homozygote0 also, size of your house, how many floors, type of walls (exterior and interior) would also be a factor

@jefferson I have a question if I get the google mesh setup what will I need to replace? For example I have at&t as my internet provider will I need to replace the router?
by (1.9k points)
@duhamel23061 if your provider has an existing router provided to you, and is combined or built into the gateway modem, you can use Google Wifi as a Bridge. You basically turn off the WiFi functionality of your existing router/modem and use google nest for wifi/mesh. But if you can make Google the router (meaning totally get rid of your existing router), it would be much simpler and much better

@jefferson thank you

@jefferson thank you so much. We have the ring alarm so we need something better so we get a better connection in our garage.

@jefferson do you happen to know how to make google the router if internet provider is thru cable company?
by (1.9k points)
@ignition2 again, depends on the type of modem you have, if it has built-in router or not. If the gateway modem is just a modem, then, connecting the google to it is easy as it will act as a router by default. It’s pretty straightforward, the google home app will guide you every step of the way.

I don’t use an extender. I ended up adding the Google mesh system to my home. Best decision ever! I have excellent coverage to all 4 corners of my house and the backyard.

I use a net gear one and it gets better RSSI signal than my router.

Definitely don’t use the extender. I have seen people have good results with an Orbi mesh, but everyone always says a Unifi mesh has perfect results even though it’s a bit pricey. I tried Orbi but I ended up with more dead spots than with my single Asus wireless router. I believe Asus also has a mesh option but again I haven’t used it. I would honestly pick one that meets you budget and try it out, at worst you have to return it for a full refund.

I have wifi extenders at 2 houses. Work great. Just forget the Ring extenders. They are worthless.

Mesh. I have Orbi with 3 satellites.

Agreed 100% I used to have a Netgear extender in the garage and meh. Now I’ve got an Orbi setup and it’s amazing. Brick house so needed something to penetrate the walls better.

If you want the best wifi performance for everything - not just Ring - install wireless access point like Ruckus. If not, I would go with a mesh system - not a wifi extender.

@jair8166 , I have two of them and it’s not strong enough. My house is rather large
by (840 points)
Okay thank you and my house is large as well and my 2 rings pro chimes, the Signal seems to fail at times. So I will be looking into that soon, Thank you

I had an extension but was only getting 2mbps. Upgraded to a mesh system and get 120mbps or faster everywhere in my house

I have a TP Link N3000 that I got on Amazon for about $20. Been pretty decent. No complaints and super easy to set up.

Mesh is probably the way to go if you can, but I'm using the BG Electrical WiFi extender socket and it's a good solution for us.

Eero mesh system has been wonderful. Had made everything smooth and no dead spots.
by (840 points)
@younts624 is it an easy setup and how many do you ring devices do you have? I’m asking to see how many Mesh I will need?
by (820 points)
@homozygote0 easy as can be. It took probably 15-20 mins to set up my eero mesh system with four “bases” or “hubs”. Most of it was consumed reading the directions. I have ring doorbell, three spotlight cams, full security system with window and door sensors. If I remember right there are 16 of those.
by (820 points)
I even have strong signal in my garage and on my patio
by (840 points)
I have: 1 spot light: 2 Ring pro door bells: 4 flood cam lights and 8 path lights

Mesh network routers are far better than extenders.

If you can, get the same brand extender that your WiFi router is. For example, I have a TP Link router and extenders. Mesh network is the best setup if you can afford it.

It’s better to get one that will work with everything not just a chime extender. Those only work with ring.

I had an AT&T “Mesh Extender”. It simply didn’t do the job. Just installed the eero mesh network and so far so good. Coverage in our house is much better.
