I would say they are 100% gold diggers obviously there are exceptions but u will very rarely find an agency not trying to dig money from you. think in this way -an agency has multiple clients and they have to focus on multiple type of businesses -An agency employee will not have that much time to focus just on your niche as he/she has other clients to look after as well while an inhouse person can spend more time to research and understand your business and can produce better results.

@presswork68 but as an agency they have in-house specialists who can grow your business. They have all the time you can afford to pay. They are not cheap but if you don't. have resource internally then they are a good choice

No good thing comes cheap I understand this fact mate, but fooling clients is another common thing you ll see in agencies, I was working inhouse and in we hired an agency for content audit some creation as well - for 1000 words / there price €1000, totally ruthless.

@presswork68 I disagree. people are gold diggers regardless of industry. That doesn’t mean agencies are inherently bad or don’t serve a purpose. Many good agencies specialize in a niche which gives them better data better relationships and economies of scale, ie can produce a better product for lower price because they are doing it in volume and have developed subject matter expertise. For a company to spend the time to get that good at marketing is almost like starting a totally different company within your company. Not always efficient. An example would be a Hospitals choosing to stay in the business of saving lives and not the Online Public relations business. There are agencies that are amazing at hospital PR and they cost a lot. but a lot less then a hospital doing the research development staffing HR insurance to bring that in house.

@unstrained37453 your example is apt, on hospitals, as most of the times hospitals dont have a marketing team - so its better to hire an agency than building a new inhouse team but if you have a marketing team in your business than a knowledgeable dedicated inhouse resource can add more value as compared to an agency.

@presswork68 I just gave an example of why a marketing agency makes sense and it sounds like you agree. The same principle applies for many different industries not just hospitals.

You get to do what you’re good at, while they do what they are good at. In the end you make more money because you both do what you are good at

Someone just asked this lol - Because they generally bring in qualified leads cheaper and more competently than traditional methods. And because you would lose significantly more resources through time in research, money in failed budgets, and opportunity costs from lack of knowledge, by doing it yourself than you would to pay the fees of an experienced agency. My job is effectively to make other people money. If I didn't make them significantly more than what they paid me then I failed at my job. Additional response for the comments here - I don't personally believe in hiring people or freelancers rather than agencies. Let the agency hire people and freelancers, but it is better to be deal with agencies that have a vested interest in your results. Freelancers or people that do things on the side have upsides for doing good work, but no downsides for doing bad work because they don't have enough notoriety or branding to be punished when something goes wrong. This means that it often enters into a conflicting interest where it is not worth it for the freelancer to do the finer details or maintenance that comes from agencies. Unless you are hiring them for several projects and they have vested interest in your performance freelancers can be very dangerous. I see so so so many websites done by freelancers that are completely broken. This happens with agencies too sure, but so much more often with freelancers that don't have as much experience, don't have outlined processes, or are trying harder to hit their monthly quotas to pay their bills.

Expertise, and delivery. A good agency can offer cutting edge expertise, whereas a company can dabble or pay someone with lower levels of expertise to work in-house. And in terms of delivery, agencies that offer quality reporting and good account management can offer a level of accountability and deliver on bigger projects in a way that an in house team or individual could not.
