So, this may have been a coincidence, but shortly after making an update to a script I have in the footer for a third party plugin that collects data on visitors (similar to GA), my ranking tanked across the board. I quickly changed it back to the way it was and things are back to normal now. Does anyone know why this has happened? The site speed/score was much better after the update.

To be 99. 99% sure it's the plugin you should restore it and see if the site tanks again. Doubtful speed had anything to do with it unless the plugin impeded crawling. The crawler doesn't care about page rendering times. The rendering engine is run offline by a separate process. Did the plugin add any links to the page? Maybe the plugin created a conflict with something?
