I need input.  I sooooooo fully expect my solution to work.I need input. I sooooooo fully expect my solution to work. but is it worth it? I've thought of a convoluted method to get "push notifications" for certain events from Alexa without me prompting Alexa. If motion is detected on any echo flex motion sensor, I can have any echo I have announce anything. Even "halt! Who goes there! ". So let's say that as soon as a new episode is uploaded to YouTube from a youtuber I love is uploaded, I want my Alexa to tell me. But despite promises that it was coming. you can't do that. but you CAN get an immediate alert if any of your echo flex motion detectors sense motion. So what I can do is. using IFTTT: IF a new episode is detected THEN power is supplied to an etekcity smart outlet. which is in a box which also contains an echo flex with a motion sensor attached. The thing plugged into that smart outlet is something that moves. I then set a routine for that particular motion sensor so that when motion is detected, my primary Alexa will say "A new episode of [YouTube channel] has just been uploaded! " This solution would cost me: $20 for an echo flex $15 for the echo flex motion sensor $6 for the smart outlet (assuming I bought it in a bulk order) $2 for an extension cord to go into the box Unknown cost For the box Unknown cost For my time Unknown cost of whatever it is that moves. Some kind of metronome-ish powered gadget. Unknown cost for the physical space this box takes up. I estimate twice the size of a typical shoe box So at least $50 for every custom push notification I may want BUT it would work. LOL There's no doubt in my mind that this would work. so long as all the devices do what they're supposed to do. but is it worth $50 per custom push notification I want? Because I'd wind up with a bank of boxes that looks like an IKEA box shelving system in my storage room in the basement. "This box tells me when WTFIWWY uploads a new episode. This box tells me when I have a delivery from USPS/UPS/FedEx, this box tells me if we're going to have extreme temperatures today (below 20 or above 90 or whatever I change it to). "
I need input. I sooooooo fully expect my solution to work.

Creative, sounds a bit like a Rube Goldberg machine of home automation! ;)

Without actually running the loop I could probably do this with smartthings relatively easily. Alexa isn't a bad base but if you are wanting to expand I recommend an actual hub.

IFTTT triggers a virtual contact sensor to open which triggers a routine in Alexa.

So alexa can only trigger on contact sensors from smartthings. There is a custom handler that you can create a virtual device and then have it act like a open close sensor. You can then have IFTTT tigger the virtual switch which in turn triggers an Alexa routine.

@axel52 fewer steps and doesn't rely on physical devices other than the hub and echo. If you are going to spend 50 bucks spend the 50 bucks on the hub which is going to give you more bang for your buck long term

@axel52 1. IFTTT recipe triggers a virtual switch 2. Virtual switch triggers Alexa routine 3. Alexa routine sends announcement. Likely it would take me about 10 minutes to set up right now if I wanted.

@axel52 I just looked and Alexa isn't an option for the "that" portion of the recipe.

@axel52 I agree. You certainly could go the route you proposed and it should work. However for the same upfront cost you pick up a hub which will do more for you long term. Just my thoughts :)

Probably much easier with NodeRed running on a Raspberry Pi. I have mine setup to announce when it's about to rain if the washing is on the line.

@sizable Using a pull sensor on the line itself?

@dextrality no, didn't go that far. I just tell Alexa when I've put the washing out or when I've got it in again, which toggles a logical switch.

Reading this makes me so happy I'm on Home Assistant with node red installed :)

Just use  on Home Assistant. I use my Echo Dots to announce everything from what bin to put out to new Star Trek episodes.
