Hi guys I'm just trying to get my first smart gadgets up and running. I've got an IP camera on the outside wall of my porch that can be controlled through Alexa but keeps losing internet connection which causes Alexa to keep on telling me that it's "found new devises" when the camera gets it's connection back. I've bought a wi-fi extender that hasn't seemed to make any difference. My question is are all extenders the same or can anyone recommend an extender?

Research Routers and Mesh systems. Google and Netgear seem to be highly popular.

Don't get an extender. Get a Mesh to cover your whole house. I love my Orbi RBK50. A lot of people will come along shortly and say Ubiquiti

People call a few things WiFi extenders just to make things more fun. WiFi cams always drop frames. Anyone that tells you diff has not looked at their footage close enough. Granted you might no notice till you are trying to pull a face or plate after something happened. Which if all you are doing is viewing via a Show might not matter to you. But if you care because you also record to NVR or cloud: First if there is ANY way to get the camera wired, do that. If you can't run a cable near by then your second best choice for a cam or a few close together is one of these  putting on end at your router and the other as close as you can manage to the cam. And hopefully wire it / them to the adapter or at least you will have really strong WiFi at the cam(s). If the cams needs to be WiFi but you can get a cable near then a wire AP is best. If you can't run any cables or need wider coverage on a tight budget always go mesh but you should know that, like a wireless extender (wireless in and out) doubles the chance for dropped frames.
