You can't a Chromecast isn't able to connect to the smartthings hub. A Google home is though.

@marni22595 Okay  Yes I'm proven it's an option in Google home, I'm using that too now. But had hoped I could put things together in st, and then run an automation which turned off everything

You can run an automation in Google Home that turns everything off, because Home can control ST, but not the other way around.

@daub25948 you can't turn "off" a chromecast, there is no sleep or off function. What you can do is connect the TV and the Chromecast to ST connected plugs that can be automated.

@marni22595 thats was i ment

@marni22595 if you turn off your cromecast, you would én be able to use the auto turn on/off and

@marni22595 you can tell a Chromecast device to turn off, and it'll issue the CEC command to turn off the TV it's connected to. On works the same. The Chromecast itself isn't off, never is if it has power but it can become the on/off switch for your TV.

@sixpack Exactly! Finally,  someone who understood it

Yes you can use chromecast to turn off a TV and you can use the home to broadcast a command to turn off the TV, but I dont know if you can use ST to tell the home to broadcast the off TV. The easiest solution would be to get a smart plug and plug the TV into that.

To confirm - you aren't using the Chromecast to turn off your TV. You're using Google Home to turn off your TV through the Chromecast. Right? In other words, you wouldn't be able to do it without Google Home, correct?

@elke711 No i am using the cromecast through home. I could do anything whitout one or the other. What s your point?
by (150 points)
@daub25948 Everything I am reading says that Google Home is required to use a Chromecast to turn your TV off.
by (150 points)
@daub25948 Unless you can show me something that says otherwise, my point is that what you're actually looking for is a way for ST to tell Google Home to turn off your TV. I don't think there is any simple way to do this, though you might be able to rig something up. Personally I would recommend instead getting a Harmony Hub or something similar to control your TV via ST.

Having looked through Google I can't find anything where you can turn on or off your television via smartthings and then through the Chromecast. It looks as though you can only use the the Chromecast app for smartthings to stream and not control the device

You can add chromecast and google home speakers to ST with Web Cast Api. Set it up with Node. js on a always on computer/Rpie. It works wery good. Can use CC and Google home as alarm speakers. Search for Web cast api for smartthings on google

@elyse1 can you install node. js on fire8 tablet ? It's always on and I'm using it as my control board with action tiles , full kiosk

@elyse1 ok thanks. will have to do more research. I'm using bigtalker2 with Lannouncer . to announce stuff on my Google mini , but it stoppes working Evey 7 to 14 days . need to restart Lannouncer on tablet Everytime. it's annoying. Want to try something more stable

You can do it vis a harmony hub. All your doing is switching inputs on your receiver/tv. Harmony integrates with Alexa and SmartThings.
by (15k points)
@prunella true, but then you're not really integrating chromecast in ST
by (640 points)
@hague , why so?
by (15k points)
@prunella because your device in ST is harmony hub, not chromecast. I understand what you're doing and that this is likely the best solution, it's just not a true integration of chromecast in ST.
by (15k points)
@prunella maybe I took his question too literally ‍♂️
by (640 points)
@hague , I’m not sure what level of integration your intending to use, but all my remote activities on the harmony remote shows up on ST as an activity. It has the same capabilities of a switch and is available in WC.
