I hope you don't mind a total newbie question. In my reading, I'm learning there are various communication protocols smart devices use. Mostly heard of WiFi, Zwave & Zigbee. My question is, are there hubs that can handle multiple protocols? Any recommendations on protocol(s) to use? If it matters, I am aiming to bring all the various devices/data together in a software package known as Home Assistant. I have already integrated the few smart devices I have (Google Home, Smart TV, Harmony Hub, Bond ceiling fan/light controller and Nest Thermostat). Thanks in advance.

HomeAssistant is the answer here. It works with all of the things. For zwave and zigbee you'd just need a usb combo zwave / zigbee antenna (HUSBZB-1).

Use zigbee2mqtt with home assistant for a less expensive dongle. Zigbee devices are much cheaper than z-wave. Personally I use mains powered wifi devices flashed with tasmota to keep them local. Battery sensors (window and motion) are zigbee.

There’s something called Homey from Athom, but not sure if they have an US version
