What do you want to make smart about it? Softeners run all the time don't they?

We are thinking about getting a water softener and know nothing about it. But if I'm going to get one, I want all options open.

@demagnetize I have one, and I don't know that there is much to smarten up. The only thing I can think of is some sort of notification system to tell you to add salt.

How well did it work when you put one in? Are they worth it? We get too much clogging in our shower heads and bathtub spouts.

@demagnetize soft water feels weird at first, but it is good for your skin and hair, and yes, it is better for appliances and shower heads.

@demagnetize when I did some research a couple years ago for water softener systems using a Fleck Valve was highly recommended. Search on Amazon for Fleck water softener and you'll see some options. Pay attention to whether it's meant for well water or city water as the resin in the softener is different for each (I made mistake of ordering wrong one). It's not "smart" at all but seems to do a pretty good job. Water hardness is adjustable. Good luck.

Out of curiosity. how does the water taste? We drink the tap water.

I think ours tastes great, but it also passes through the fridge's carbon filter before we drink it.
