Anyone using Keen vents?  Debating on 2 of them for my bedroom, it gets warmer then the rest of the house so it would be useful to close them when the room reaches a certain temperature.Anyone using Keen vents? I have a bunch of these I bought when Lowe's clearances them out. Have a several of the 6 x 10 and 6 x 12 my house is all 4 inch. Just have not around to selling them. May have a few more 4x10 and 4x12 also. I'll make some good deals.

Yup. Have one in our daughters room. Automated to close if her room temperature is higher than the heat set point in our ecobee.

This is exactly what I want to do.

I’m totally dumb about vents(registers? ). I assume their battery operated? Others thoughts on longevity, value?
by (21.2k points)
@amytal823 keen uses 4 AA batteries. I put rechargeable a in mine. They last 9+ months. I’ve had the vent a couple years now.

I have 5 of them for upstairs they work, before them I would manually close the vents in the winter and open them in the summer. Much more convenient.

Smart vents are about convenience and comfort. I have several in targeted areas, programmed to partially close during certain hours and HVAC state. One is above a kitchen eating area where it is helpful in the summer to reduce the amount of cold air blowing towards one of the seats. Battery life is mostly driven by the number of physical operations the vent performs. I've had to swap batteries after 6-8 months for vents that open/close daily while others are still on the original batteries and reporting 75%+ battery level. The keen vents are frequently transmitting vent temperature to my hub, which surprisingly doesn't use up all that much power.

They take AA right?

@hunter14 yes, 4 of them

Just for clarification, the temp sensors in the Keen vents only measure the temp in the vent itself, not the ambient temp of the room. I have Ecobee room sensors in various rooms that are used in conjunction with the Keen vents for determining vent position. I also use the vent temp to turn on a ceiling fan when the temp exceeds a certain value instead of just switching the fan on when heat is initially called so that I begin air circulation after the air from the vents is warm enough.

All things I would like to do. I work 3rs shift so I sleep during the day. My bedroom gets so warm when my wife and son are home since the ecobee senses their motion.

They run sales every now and then (one just ended on 2/2). Don't know if they ship to Canada. Here's a link for 10% off if you aren't able to catch a sale:

My problem with smart vents is if closed all the way start to build back pressure in the duct work. If you have the soft ducts like I do, it can cause integrity failure in the ducts and spend more money on AC. Could spend the money on getting bypass duct work installed but that’s more money. I’ve opted to use sensors and my thermostat circulation mode to circulate the air longer than using heat or AC to get the house more temperature even.

I’m interested in these too. But the reviews on Amazon are awful. No issues with the ones you guys have?

I have a bunch of them and it has worked wonders to normalizing the temperature on my second floor. The key is using them the correct way. If you're smart about it they will make a huge difference. If you're not smart about it and just expect them to work then you'll be like the people writing reviews on Amazon

Have to be careful with these. Your HVAC system is designed to move X amount of air at a certain pressure. Too many closed vents can damage the blower motor in the furnace

I have 4 and they all work great. Perfect for balancing heat and cool loads. Just keep in mind closing vents increase static pressure and typically reduce airflow across your furnace and cooling coil. Reducing efficiency and risking damage.
