Don't leave the door open an inch? Can't see a useful purpose for having the door open one inch, close it properly or open it a useful amount. If you want the sensor to trigger as soon as the door is a tiny bit open, you'll have to mount it further away from the magnet and experiment a bit to find the trigger point that will keep you happy

@lebaron If the door is open an inch is still reads!

@limacine1 exactly. So don't open the door just an inch, either open it properly or close it properly. That's a human error, not a sensor error. Can't see any reason the door would be open an inch except if young kids in the house mess with it. In which case, get used to some chaos in your life

@lebaron This is a rental. I have no control over that.

So other people are leaving your door open an inch? Sounds like any issues arising from that would be on the party that left it open. Gave you a super simple way to set up how you want it, you just have to work out the required gap and set the sensor accordingly. Physically, there is nothing you can do in software.

@lebaron have you never had kids?  Absolutely one ought to close the slider all the way. But since people don't, many of us use a sensor to tell us when the door isn't closed, or closed all the way.

I've got kids. Doors have locks, if I don't want my young kids to open them a bit, the lock is used. If I want them open a bit then it's more than an inch, and can be set in that position too. If opening an app and checking the sensor is more convenient than looking at the door, then as I posted, set the gap on the sensor to magnet to get the desired result.

@lebaron offering life advice to other people looking for a technical solution is, well it's not all that cool dude. The question was about technology. Not how one ought to run their own household.

@strawflower408 if you'll climb down from that high horse for a moment, it was a practical suggestion to the door being open an inch issue. Not everything needs solving with tech, it wasn't life advice it was pondering on the root of the issue - not a lot of information proffered, so wondering on the issue or non issue of a sliding door being open one inch.

@lebaron I could sit here and come up with a dozen valid and understandable reasons why this may be something one wants. You weren't pondering, you said "So don't open the door just an inch, either open it properly or close it properly. That's a human error, not a sensor error. " I'm still amazed you felt comfortable typing that. It's one part dismissive and three parts rude.

Hardly qualifies as life advice to open close doors properly? Just good sense. Yikes, sensitive much. Ok, people apparently have a use for sliding doors being open one inch, strange world, more power to you. I've offered an easy way to set the desired sensor result. Do you have a solution to offer or just here to criticize without offering anything practical?

I have to say though, Scott's solution of moving the sensor so when the door is fully closed there is a gap between the sensors contacts don't actually meet, but do just read as closed should work.

Adjust the difference between the sensor halves

How do I do that on the new app

It's not an app change. You'd need to physically move the two parts to the sensor - the main half and the magnet.

Ok, super super simple explanation to get what you want. Open the door slooooooowly. Like a 1/4 inch at a time, give it 30 seconds, check the app. You'll find a point where it goes from closed to open. Close it again a tiny bit, confirm that it goes to closed. Open it back to where you had it, confirm it goes to open. Take a ruler, measure the distance between the sensor and the magnet. Now close the door fully, take off the sensor or magnet. Take your ruler and now put back the sensor or magnet to the distance that you just worked out. If you did it right, now it'll activate right away when opening and won't show closed if it's open an inch.

Mount the sensor further back so only closed is closed.
