Yesterday I decided that i wanted to get a gym membership for my boyfriend and I. We are currently living off of one income (his) and I’m going to school full time. Our budget has little wiggle room, but I just can’t help but to think that I only have one life and I want it to be the best I can make it. So what’s an extra $20 a month to our budget? ‍♀️ The money aspect has been stopping us for so long but I can’t wait any longer! What are your thoughts?

You will enjoy your life more if you are active and healthy. Additionally, working out will help with stress and may help your relationship grow more since you guys will be in it together. I say do it, if you can spare the $20.

Always go with active. $20 each or total? What gym are you trying to go to? Will you all be going together? If planet fitness and going together. Get the one black membership and you can go together

@liaoyang I was thinking about this. It is planet. My only worry is who’s name to put it under. Because if I do it under myself he can’t go by himself right? I would always have to go with?
by (1.5k points)
@redhead right y’all would always have to go together. Or do one for each of y’all at $10
by (1.5k points)
@redhead black only good if you only go together. But $20 is nothing. I’m a bodybuilder and have multiple gym memberships. But I also have a PF one

There are TONS of ways to workout for free. Running/body weight exercises, videos on YouTube, swimming at a local pool or body of water. I lost 50lbs without a gym membership.

@jugulate I knew someone was going to mention this, I didn’t want to make the post too long so I didn’t bring it up. I do yoga at home but honestly I hate running in my area I just don’t feel safe. I’m not really into losing weight but just being healthier and exercising so I wanted to try the gym

Either way! Sounds like you’re set on the gym, which is totally cool. Just wanted to throw it out there that you can keep up with fitness/wellness for free too. You don’t HAVE to do the gym. But it’s your dollar, you do you.

Do what you need to do . I know I can work out home but I need to get out! Thankfully my job reimburses for health wellness related stuff so Its basically free as I will rollover what they pay me back.

Not sure if you’re doing online or on campus but If you live close to your college you should get access to their rec center for free. Only your boyfriend would need a membership
by (3.1k points)
@demurral I thought of this too because it’s free for me to go there buts it’s way too far unfortunately! I’d rather just get the membership because I know I won’t make a long drive just for the gym lol

Money well spent. If you joined a gym that cost $100 I’d feel differently but $20 is fantastic.

If it makes you happy and you have room in your budget then you should do it. I have 2 gym memberships that I refuse to cut. I cut other costs to keep these. Besides, if you can go together, then it’s a bonus for your relationship. I’m sure you can always cancel if you realize you don’t end up using it as much.

If you are making it a life style and in the gym a lot. Then it’s well worth it.

Do it! Your health is totally worth $20 a month. Careful about registration fees. Some gyms charge an annual maintenance fee too. Just make sure you know and are prepared for them if yours does.
by (3.1k points)
@dellora yes I did look into this! . 25¢ to register at planet fitness and they have a yearly fee of $39 that comes out in April

You work to live, not the other way around. As long as you are living within your means and trying to think ahead

My Insurance offers a free gym membership, I just have to go 45 times a year. Ask your insurance! The program is called Active and Fit.

Does your school have a gym? You could be going for free there, it is usually part of tuition.

Will he go by himself? My husband only went with me because he wouldn't go otherwise. I used the black "extras" and he didn't. Also, we showered there to reduce our water bill. It went down $10 a month

A discount at the city run fitness facilities is included in my student fees, I would find out if the same is available for you?

Gym membership is a medical expense for me. In our case is not actually a gym but purchases to build a home gym. It's a necessity to keep you healthy and happy

Ur college has free gym usage. Idk if he’ll be able to use it but ask. Also, planet fitness is only $10. As long as you use it, It’s a great idea!

If you use it, it’s worth it. If not, it’s not. So pay the fee and get after it! Honestly sometimes gym time together is our date night.

If you’re doing PF and don’t plan to tan or do the extras that come with the black do the $10 for each of you then you don’t have to worry about going together. Also look at it as spending money on being healthier and spending time together.

I bought a peloton with no caution to budget. I work 19 hours on most days abs wasnt getting to gym. No regrets
by (1.4k points)
@chimera we bought ours too at the beginning of January and with the subscription it’s so much better than a gym membership! I’m wayyyy more motivated to work out and don’t have to leave my house and have multiple types of workout programs available to me!
by (2.7k points)
@demogorgon Putney ahhh maybe I'll see you spinning one day. My husband is a gym freak, moody if he can't go so after a 12 hour day and gym he gets home late so the bike which I bought has been his cardio every morning cutting gym time. Win win

We have gym memberships for all family members, it’s defiantly more expensive then $20. (It’s $133 for the 3 of us) Ours is to a local YMCA though and we use it at least 4-5x a week each. This allows me to take my daughter to swimming lessons, active art programs, child minding etc for no extra cost. I love the flexibility of the different programs. For us though we only pay for part time daycare which saves us $500/month in daycare costs so I use this to off set my sanity as if I’m not at work I have my daughter every day, regardless if I just worked a night shift or not.

I just signed up in January even though financially I probably should not have, but I need some way to relieve stress and be more active. I just need to get there now, my time is pretty limited.
by (3.1k points)
@benil I feel you! But I think it’ll all be worth it for you! You’ll feel so good about yourself
by (9.2k points)
@redhead definitely! Each time I go, I’m like when can I go back?  I just wish I was a morning person so I could go before work. maybe one day!
by (3.1k points)
@benil I literally signed up today and was begging my boyfriend to go but he’s been working for like 9 hours so he’s tired  I was like fine but for sure tomorrow lmao

We’re going to switch my husband’s membership soon. So he’ll be able to take me as his guest. It’ll be $20 month instead of $10. Since we’re both trying to get in shape. I’d say if you’re planning to utilize it a lot then yes. But if you notice you’re not just cancel.

Cut out an extra coffee or so and boom done paid for! I think it’s a good idea for only $20 too. You are always worth investing in

I joined a CycleBar. I love it and it’s the one thing I do for me. It’s $109 monthly but it’s one thing I am doing for me while I am in this debt free journey

$20 per month is $5 per week. you can cut from somewhere to make it work. working out is a great stress reliever! I play roller derby (2 nights) and 3-4 nights I go to the gym.  now i need to just fix the diet!

@concrescence I knew someone who worked there and heard many terrible things about the location here with the management so I’m staying away from it
