Question for everyone.  how important is renters insurance?Question for everyone. how important is renters insurance? I’m signing a lease today for my first place on my own and am wondering if I should get it. Second. do any nurses in here have malpractice insurance? I feel like I should get it to protect myself but not sure if it’s worth it. I’m trying to work both of these into my budget and I would probably just pay them both upfront for the year instead of monthly payments
Question for everyone. how important is renters insurance?

In California- yes to both (rn in icu) employers will protect themselves first always- I want someone who has my back- like 100/yr well worth peace of mind- and if you change jobs your former employer isn’t going to be inclined to protect you for something that happened years ago
by (2k points)
@noun40 yes you both! I was told by numerous nursing instructors and mentors back then to get a malpractice insurance to protect yourself!
by (1.7k points)
@chantal yeah I was required to have it in school 15 yrs ago and have had it since

Definitely get your own malpractice insurance. Never had to use it but when you need it at least you’re protected. Coz your employer won’t have your back - u have to protect yourself

I always had it when I rented apartments. It’s better to be safe than sorry! You can usually get a discount if you bundle with your car insurance.

I’ve always had renter’s insurance - never needed it (knock on wood) but I’m sure if we didn’t have it, we’d need it! As far as malpractice insurance, as a nurse, you should be covered under your employer. But I’d look into this further if you’re concerned! I haven’t don’t much research about it TBH. I’ve had it in the past because I needed it when I traveled internationally to help out at a free health clinic but I cancelled it since then (didn’t want to keep paying).

YES! And also to add to what everyone else has said, I'm not sure if it's an apartment or home that you are going to be leasing, but if it is with a property management company, 9 times out of 10 they require it anyway.

I strongly urge you to get both. Many spoke to renter's insurance so I'll leave it there. As for RN and insurance, the cost is minimal but can save you a ton of something happens. Remember that your work setting will protect itself and you will be on your own if you personally are find at fault. You might never need it, but like car, house, and renter's insurance, if something does happen, you are protected.

Yes get it, when I got renters insurance it lowered my car insurance so it basically was the same cost

@chantress get the renters insurance and make sure you have the flood addition too. Because if apartment floods and belongings are ruined regular rental insurance won’t cover the damages. I use Lemonade insurance company and pay $5. 84 a month.

Definitely get it! It’s super cheap too, we pay $132 a year!

Get it. My neighbors had let it lapse, and their garage burned down. The landlord was insured to get it rebuilt, but they lost all their belongings stored in it.

Yes to renter's insurance and make sure your valuables are listed if you are burglarized. I was covered when all of my optometry professional equipment and electronics were stolen while I was a student.

Get the renters insurance. We just an entire apartment complex burn down on Monday. Every family was displaced. Many of them did not have Renters insurance. Not only does it cover your belongings, it will put you in a hotel or temp housing. It will also cover some personal liability. It is too cheap to go without it in the case of an emergency.

We require our renters to get renters insurance even though we have homeowners on the houses. *especially If it’s a house (I’m not sure about an apartment), check your rental agreement— it may be required.

Very important! You’re living in a place with other occupants and you have no control over the stupid crap they do like leave the oven on, leave a candle burning, sleep smoking a cigarette, etc.

I guess it depends on how much money you have saved- can you afford to rebuy EVERYTHING you own? Most likely the answer to that is no and that is why it’s so important to have.

Very important and most apartment complex’s require it.

I mean if you have personal items of value and things that would need replacing it’s very important. If there is a fire you’re landlord’s policy only covers rebuilding. It does NOT cover contents. So if you lost all your furniture, electronics, clothing, food and toiletries etc could you afford to repurchase all that?

It’s very important and usually really cheap if you bundle with car insurance. I’ve got $20k renters insurance for like $100/year

You definitely want it. When we rented we paid like $15/month for it and honestly insurance is priceless if there’s a fire or a flood etc and you lose everything. Check with your car insurance company to see if you can do a bundle discount!

It's a must! It covers your belongs. It's much less expensive then having to replace things. & many landlords & mgmt companies require it.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT! We manage homes and had a tenant who DID NOT have it last year and then she flooded the place over winter break. our insurance covered the home and replacing all of the drywall, appliances and hardwood flooring and painting, but ALL of her belongings were lost and she got nothing back to replace them all. (The flood was her fault anyways, she turned off the furnace during an ILLINOIS winter and pipes froze while she was in Cancun for a month)

Most landlords require it - I do. If your property is damaged- say, the roof leaks on your things or the place burns down, your property is not protected. It’s cheap, so you should get it. I’m a nurse and I don’t have malpractice insurance. I’m protected by the hospital I work for- why would you need it individually?

Yes to renter’s insurance and nurse liability/malpractice insurance! I have both. They’re worth the cost.

I recommend it. I got it with my first apartment and never regretted it. It covered my furniture, electronics and a few other things. I mean, if you had an apartment fire or who knows what, insurance will help you out.

I’m surprised the insurance isn’t a requirement. Yes, you should have renters insurance. When my fiancé had it it was like $11/mo.

I got it when I had an apartment. Worth it. to have stuff covered incase someone else's negligence! And I didn't have money to repcle all my stuff if something happened. It wasn't very much either.

I have malpractice insure and an RN and a policy as a NP student. Both are definitely worth it. Your job gives you it free most likely if you’re in a hospital but your job also has a responsibility to protect themselves in the case of a lawsuit so I think it’s beneficial to have your own policy as well

So this one time, in college, my roommate and I decided to come home for Thanksgiving. We were driving from Chicago to Michigan. We turned the heat down a bit too low and literally froze the pipes not only in our unit but the units above and below us. We were 22 and paid $8, 737. 46 to replace the pipes and damages. It was super fun. We did not have renter's insurance.

Renters insurance is legally required where I live. Usually very cheap $15 or under a month.

Yes, very important. UNTIL now I have never had to use it but after my washing machine overflowed and some of the water went into the closet and got the carpet soaked. The insurance gives you and the landlord piece of mind that you are protected as well as landlord.

You NEED it! its so inexpensive and you will thank yourself. one of the apartment complexes in our neighborhood caught fire because of somebody else's negligence, and a lot of the renters didn't have insurance. without it they wouldn't have a place to stay in the meantime or money for replacement furniture. ours was about $150 for a year and we got it through the company our car insurance is through. you truly never know what might happen

You absolutely need renters insurance. It’s cheap for peace of mind. Like less than $20/month. You’ll probably get a discount if you go through your auto insurance company. Check your employer if they have malpractice insurance. I don’t have it, but would consider extra if I worked in a high-litigious area like OB.

The house we were renting was badly damaged in a storm. Renters insurance covered our hotel for 6 weeks, putting our possessions in storage, etc. It's so worth it.

Yes! And remember, you still need it even if you are living with someone else but not on the deed to the house. My neighbors house was broken into and bunch of his fiancés stuff was stolen. She was not on deed or mortgage and did not have renters so nothing was covered.

100% important we rented and our house caught on fire 8 weeks in a paid for rental and all our stuff replaced. Priceless IMHO. and yes I privately pay for malpractice insurance because you never know what kind of stupid your going to take care of. It's very inexpensive for both, do it, you wont regret it.
